Buying a UV filter...

So i am looking to get a UV filter to protect the lens on my new DVX. I read a few threads where people say buying a cheap on is fine seeing as its just going to protect the lens, but a few reviews of cheap filters suggest some may cause image problems.

Anyone have any thoughts / suggestions on what seems to get you the best bang for your buck?

Look after your lens. When you arent shooting use the lens cap. Use filters when needed. Dont put rubbish on the end of your lens.

EDIT: If you think you are incapable of looking after the lens, then yes buy all means, a little possible image degradation is nothing compared to what a scratched up lens would be.

It depends where in the world you are shooting... using a UV filter as you know removed UV from sunlight so using a standard UV filter in high altitides will actually remove too much violet from your image and make it look a littel red and vise-versa. If you're near sea level then just go with any standard UV filter, we personally use LEE UV filters which will run you like $75 but I'm heard they're top of the line.

Thanks for the info everyone. I am in a higher altitude so i will take that into consideration, especially since i shoot 80% outside. Perhaps i would be better off going with a polarizer filter.

i have a relatively inexpensive uv filter and see no loss in image quality.

Well its all subjective. I just think whats the point of having an expensive lens, when your going to throw a cheap piece of glass on the front. The thing is though this is in DVX forum, and your unlikely to see anything major at SD resolution.

Before you go out and buy a cheap UV or spend a ton for a high-end UV, check the used still camera market; a lot of good 72mm filters are out there due to the dumping of film cameras to digital.

KSC,
$125 for a completely clear piece of glass is pretty harsh, I personally would get a cheaper (not the absolute most inexpensive, but no more than $30) UV filter.

I couldn't believe the difference I saw using the stock lens and a cheap tiffen filter. It GREATLY softened the image. I've got a heliopan on now with no complaints.

I live at 6200 feet and shoot 100% outdoors for what it's worth.

Ah, too late. :(

I ended up going with the B+W MRC Haze. Paid about $70. Someone like me who's never shot on video in my life probably should have went with something cheaper, but sometimes I get this "all or none mentality" and think I need the best.

Just for fun I'll mail you the $25 tiffen I've got so you can try it and see what I mean. Compare the two and I think you'll be happy with your purchase.

I admit it's probably a nice beer coaster. For something you want to stick in front of a leica lens though.......not so much.:D
