Buying A Panasonic GH1 this week = Everything I Need?????

Thanks, I will definitely look into the lens when I have the money.

Besides that I didn't want to make a new thread but does anyone know of any good photography/video editing schools online?

I have my GI BILL from the military and I think educating myself professional is a good start. So does anyone know of any good online schools for this?

THanks

This site?

tears what i think he meant was that u should buy the basics and then as u learn the camera u will know more specifically what you personally will need in regards to the material you shoot...because different types of shooting require different things. i dont think it was meant to be negetive. the caps may have been him tryin to emphasize the personal aspect of what u personally shoot.

i could be wrong :) love and peace ya'll

The CAP means exactly what you stated. No negativity intended.

I'm getting ready to buy the camera now, does anyone have/use a UV filter or a filter of some kind to protect the lens?

Thanks

--------

I asked a question a couple of pages back regarding some type of protection for my camera, I came across this

Even though it's not for the GH1 I now know that someone somewhere makes these and it's only a matter of time for me to find one for the GH1

Sean Jeong,
I strongly suspect SD/SDHC card manufacturers have one "chip baking" process and several sales strategies. The result is cards labeled "category 6" have to be that fast but ones labeled otherwise don't have to be that fast. If the card works, fine. But I think it’s false economy to save a couple bucks buying slower rated cards that may not work.

Well the one thing you do need that hasn't been mentioned is that to make use of short "cinematic" depth of field focus which is the prime reason for getting any HDSLR are neutral density filters (ND) in daylight situations. Otherwise you'll just end up with small aperture footage that look like any camcorder or stroby looking short shutter speed that looks odd and electronic for most things.

There are two variaties, either ones with fixed steps or a 'variable' type that uses two polarizers - a inexpensive method for the former are Cokins with a filter holder and for the latter people seems to be satisfied with Fader ND from Light Craft Workshop. Search the GH1 hardware forum for more info.

Nice list! But what's the locktite for?

 It's to keep the tripod head from coming loose...the Velbon Sherpa doesn't have those nice little locking screws like Manfrotto legs do. But what is DOES have are spreaders for the legs...which none of the lightweight/photo Manfrotto tripods have....maing it extremely fast to setup when doing weddings/events.

Thank you, I will need to look into this.

So these are what I need? Also I have been doing some research on buying an extra battery and need to be careful as the latest firm ware from Panasonic does not allow most 3rd party batteries.....

Learning, learning........

no...go on ebay and type in Fader ND....or u can google it. its one ND filter that will allow u to get 3-9 stops of ND with a simple turn. very handy. buy the 77 or 72mm and use step up rings with ur lenses so u have the ability to use any size lens u want.

Tears.

Get the battery from BestBatt.com for $22.75.
Please look up my Shutter Activation Count post on dpreview about how to tell how many times the shutter was activated on the G1/GH1 camera. It will give you a pretty good idea about its shape. It is of course on the Micro Four Third forum.

Good luck.

Thank you, I just ordered it for about $26+ including shipping. The information from the site said it will work with most if not all latest firmware revision.

I seen your videos and must say very good work! Also for now I will be using the stock lens so what size Fader ND would I need? I am new to this and I'm trying to learn from the more experience users, everyone has been so helpful

THANK YOU!

Looks like for price and cost I would choose the Fader ND 77mm, my question now is will it fit on the Kit Lens?

Thank you

It won't fit the stock lens so you'll need to buy a 62mm to 77mm step up ring which you can get on ebay for a few bucks.

Thank You for your reply, I actually emailed the manufacturer and they replied to me already about this. Anything above a 62mm would need a step up ring with the GH1 lens kit.

I know this information will be helpful to someone in the future

peace

An actual email I received from the Developer of ND Filter.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello.

As the GH1 kit lens is 62mm, a Fader ND 62mm would be good enough for you, if you are not planning to have a 77mm diameter lens.
Some photographers will choose to get a larger size filter because they concern about vignetting when they are using wide angle. However, our Fader ND 62mm using on the GH1 kit lens will not cause this problem, so we suggest that a 62mm fader nd filter will be good enough in this situation.

The 77mm Fader nd is same with the 72mm, and other size. The only difference is the size of the filter.

Thank you.

Boniface

-------------------------------------------

So with that said, I will purchase the 62mm. As of now and for a long time I will use the Kit Lens and make it work. I seen footage from many professional people with the Kit Lens and it looked amazing. So I know it can be done! Yes probably somewhere in the future I would/will upgrade and think to myself I should have bought a bigger ND Fader but for now this will be fine and worst comes to worst I can always sell this one and upgrade.

Thanks everyone but I just got this information from the horses mouth
