Buying a Laptop

Hey man. Congrats on your purchase. As far as your 5400 rpm issue... You can do what I did (granted different NLE and on a pc)... Use the expresscard slot, get a eSATA expresscard, buy an eSATA enclosure (I got a thecus 2050, which is a dual drive, raid setup), and get a faster, larger internal drive for your enclosure. I am sure you can do something quite similar if not exactly the same with your mac setup. Of course there is also the FW800 to External HDD option as well, among others.
Anyways, the point is... Use the 5400 for apps only. Use the eSATA drive(s) for your footage and editing off of.
I am doing it (PC with EDIUS) and it screamssss

Congrats on your purchase man!

say what?

honestly i didnt get any of that lol, shows how up to date with this computer lingo i am.

damn, now i have to play the waiting game.. when will it show.... hmm

Well, just when you ever decide you need more hard drive space, then you can worry about it.

Please be sure to come back and make everyone jealous by saying how awesome your new system is when you get it :)

How big was the hard drive on the unit you've ordered? If you're going to use bootcamp keep in mind that it will have to partition the drive into 2 separate entities. Which means you'll have to sit down and really ponder about how much space you want to give to Windowz and how much space for Mac.

I don't know if you're going this route or not. Typically if your drive is too small you'll end up deleting windowz in the long run.

We just got our new mac pro and I spent about 10 minutes trying to make that decision!

Note on bootcamp, do not try to partition the drives yourself using the disk utility, it will not work! If you're partitioning external drives using MAC in the future, use MS DOS as the file system which is actually Fat 32. That should be both accessible to Mac OS and Windowz OS.

THe other thing you will notice if you're running dual OS is that mac os requires less power to operate. You can run on mac os for hours and on windows just idling it will chew through the battery. I dunno why.

Have fun with your new toy.

Keep in mind most Mac users are religiously devoted to their macs - no matter what you say they'll never be able to take a critical and balanced look at the issue.

so King Kong was made with Shake.... how many thousands of excellent movies were (and are) edited on AVID? or done with After Effects?

Regardless, the majority of what makes King Kong great is the CG, camera work and excellent script. the editing station has very little to do with anything.

look for a good hardware sollution. don't make your decision based on fanaticism in either direction.

Very true, though I was a religious PC user too. In fact I'd make fun of Mac users and I'd typically walk by them and call their mac stupid (as a joke). I still do to this date because I've been caught doing it so many times, however in the past 30 days I've purchased a mac mini just as a capture device for uncompressed HD and a Mac Pro for all the editing. I have purchased a Dell XPS laptop for nearly 4K and when I switch between the XPS laptop and the Mac laptop at the office, i feel like my XPS is a piece of crap. It's not Dell's fault but the actual design and feel to it on top of that the cheesy Mac OS makes windows XP feel so 80s.

Again this is just my opinion, but if anyone ever asks me which laptop should I buy, i point them towards the Mac.

Come to think of it, maybe it's the whole look of the laptop and overall design of the unit + the operating system that makes it very attractive. It's sort of like spending 100 bucks at the fine dining restaurant for an oz of steak tar tar or going to McDonalds and eating a cheese burger. It's a matter of taste I suppose :)

A very sad day today folks

im sending back my macbook pro, untill quicktime can solve these codec issues with the dvx and reds, ill be on pc. untill the day...

how can you blame your mac for NOT applying a filter during the capture process? just apply the chroma smoothing filter after the footage is imported.

" how can you blame your mac for NOT applying a filter during the capture process? just apply the chroma smoothing filter after the footage is imported. "

I have tried this, it does lessen the effect of the red pixelation, but it does not get rid of it. At the expense of blurry or desaturated reds, no thanks.

premier pro does not apply a filter upon import.

read up on what codecs do. You will understand, as i have, that the mini dv compression which the dvx delivers is something that quicktime codecs have trouble with, especially with the reds. AVI codecs and compression does not have a problem with it as quicktime currently does.

I was on the phone with an apple technician last night, which confirmed these hypothesis, either that, or he just pulled one of those " the customer is always right " and let me return it.

that being said, its not easy to return a product like this ,14 days after the purchase ( which is their return limit) refund of the warranty as well, and they waived the 10% restocking fee.

That sucks. I've always wondered why so many people post that their reds look bad. Mine don't and I use the newest Premiere Pro 2.0 Suite.Too bad, it sounded like you were gonna be adding more NLE skills to your resume'.

heh, exactly, and quite frankly, ive been using mac for two weeks, and just that is enough to make me realize how much better of an operating system mac is compared to windows.

damn thi small problem!
