Buying a DVX100BE in Europe

Hey guys,

I'm trying to buy a DVX100BE in Europe but I'm not sure where to buy it from. I've seen a brand new grey import DVX102B for about 1100€ less then what the retailers charge. Cheapest 'official' DVX I've seen was 3300€. I'll be very honest with you, I don't have a budget. The only money I have is about 4000€, that's all I have in my bank account. So I need to make some damn good investments.

What's the best way to go?

Paulus,
The only problem you might face when buying grey market cams is when it comes to warranty, Panasonic does not cover these grey market cams during the warranty period and will send you to the person were you bought it from. He has 2 options then, or he can send it back were he got it (which could be on the other side of the globe) for repairs which could take weeks or he might have a contact in his own country who does the repairs the first year after the purchase.

One thing to consider is the fact that those camera's only have a 1 year warranty.

I own such a 102b and I'm pretty sure I bought it from the same person you are refering to, I have it now about 1,5 year and mainly have used it as a back up cam meaning it only has about 15 hours on it as it has been sitting in a backpack most of the time. I know many might think this is a big waist, which it actually is but I needed a second backup cam just incase my main cam would give up on me. Since I work alone I can't operate 2 cams at the same time.

I'm switching to HD in a few months and the Panasonic will be sold. Just incase you might be interested, it has to go for 2000€.

Hi Paulus,

I'am in the same situation as you. Check out this site: http://www.creativevideo.co.uk
They've DVX100B (PAL) for 2100 Euro or so + VAT. That is a pretty good deal compared to other authorized dealers such as BH photo. As your Country is EU member too you dont have to pay tax.

Good luck with shopping! :)

Best,
Kraken

Interesting. Thanks Kraken! Well you say it's 2100 +VAT but VAT are taxes right? I know I don't have to pay taxes in the European Union but I'm not sure what VAT is.

Another problem is, is that I don't have a creditcard. I see they accept bank transfers but I need to look into it.

@NOA, thank you too for the info!

Hmmmm....could anyone share some knowledge about VAT? I need to pay 380€ VAT when I buy at Creativevideo.

vat is value added tax that the uk tax man adds onto goods @ 17.5%, not sure how it works for people buying overseas

ade4all is right VAT = vallue added tax. If you order something within the EU you definitely have to pay this kind of tax. But only once! Compared the shipping from B&H you onyl pay VAT+shipping and not VAT + duties + shipping. And do not forget the shipping costs... the US is far far away...

Thanks guys, I've read that if I register my business at the Chamber of Commerce I can avoid the VAT when I enter my CoC number. Is that true?

Think twice before buying an new DVX.
I must recommend secondhand. In EU DVX are being sold for near as much as a XH-A1, which is insane.

Assume you haven't asked yourself if you acquire HD or native 16x9, you will be disappointed of the DVX. I would strongly recommend a XH-A1.

Other than that the DVX is a great cam. But old.

I've just checked a couple of sites the difference is 1000$ between the two cams. Unfortunately for me it's pretty much... I rather spend it on accesories.
For me the progressive capture and good low light capability are more important than 16x9 and HD as my main channel is web and SDTV. However in 1,5 -2 years when HD will be prevalent enogh in my country I will definitely buy a good hd cam for exapmle the hvx200. As long as there are so many amateur film makers around I highly doubt that selling a dvx will be a huge problem... :)

Well, I'm trying to find my way into this business. I don't have a lot of money but I need that film look. This is also the first camera I'm gonna buy, so I still have alot to learn but I really nééd that film look.

Sure you will get good images. But buying one new in EU is not valuable. If you could find a good used deal I would recommend you bought one, B vers., never A.

Some feelings I get is that many buyers get an DVX and a 35mm adapter. If you are planning to make such investments, buying a new DVX will bankrupt you.

Good luck!

That is indeed what I'm planning to do. I can't afford to buy a second hand DVX without any kind of warranty.

Just one more question to stir the bottle. Have you seen much of a A1 fotage with a 35mm adapter? Try look for Macgreggor's footage with A1 + SGpro. More filmlike is hard to get.

Im just saying what I should have been told before buying an 100a.

Best,
David

No, I haven't and I'm having trouble finding it.

But like I said, I don't have much money and it seems like the A1 is more expensive then the DVX. About 500€ or so and that's money I can't afford.
