Buying a DVC30 - Help needed !!

Hello:

I am currently in the middle of closing a deal for a DVC30. It is a local deal, and I'll have the opportunity to handle the camera before deciding to buy.

There is no warranty left on the camera, but it has been lightly used -> 80+ hrs on the head and 1 year of use.

I am a total NOOB about these cameras, it is not for me is for my son. I am thinking in bringing my laptop and firewire cable, ask the seller to take some shots and download them to my laptop. I just want to make sure I don't pay $1500 for a lemon.

Can you guys please tell me what else should I ask for (in regards of testing)?. Is it really worth to get a used DVC30, or should I go for the BNIB with warranty? (Yes, money is an issue.... is either $1500 now, or $2200 next year)

Thanks for your help,

C.

Have you looked at it in person? Made sure that the heads work and all of the menus and everything works? I have a DVC30 and im looking to sell it soon with wireless lav mics, extra batteries, XLR to mini converter, and a case. It only has about 80 hrs on it. I think its alot better than the GL2's which is the only other comparable camera that I have used.

I need more specifics. My intention was to ask the seller to film something (on the spot) and download it to my laptop. Would that be too much to ask??

A camera with 80hrs on the head is considered "light use" Isn't it???

Its not that much to ask to have the seller film something and Xfer it to your laptop, provided that you have capture software readily available. 80 hours is light use on Panasonic heads. I bought mine with 64 hours on the heads about 6 months ago. Works great. Should work great for a long time.

Thanks Bayne. I appreciate your help.

For capturing I have Adobe Premiere Pro. That should be good enough.

Pay no more than 1200 unless it has the xlr. Check ebay for brand new and cheaper. 80 hrs isn't that much, and the dvc30 is a fine camcorder, but 1500 used is too much, spend $300 more and get a used dvx IMO.

Ill probably get rid of it for 1300 with everything listed above. It has 93 hours tho not around 80. Hadn't checked for a while.

End of the year. By then it will probably have 100 hrs on it. Im filming this weekend with it, but im not going to output off of it. The tapes will go to the director.

Darn i doubt id have 1300 by the end of the new yr i just started a new job 2 wks ago and im cathing up on old debt but i do need a 2nd cam. maybe next time.

thanx

Thanks for the advice MagiChris. I believe I am getting a good deal.

1- DVC30 (box and everything - bought from Amazon)
2- Canon wide angle lens (plus adaptor to fit the DVC30)
3- Extra battery
4- 2 Filters (B+W, UV haze)
5- Camera bag

I should also add:

6- Local deal (TORONTO!!!) No shipping/taxes and/or brokerage fees.

TOTAL PEACE OF MIND !!! (That is really priceless.. )

All that for $1500 Canadians (wich is around $1300 USD)

I'll be meeting him tomorrow (actually today since it is waaay past midnight)

Wish me luck guys !!!!
