Buying a 100B, but have a few questions

Hey everyone,

I know, I know, there are tons of topics here that are the same as mine but I have a couple of specific questions and I know you all can give me good answers. Sooo...I plan on buying a DVX-100B next week from B&H in Manhattan. The camera is about $2600. I think this is a pretty decent deal and they are a respectable company. I am going to haggle with them a bit to see what I can get. Anyways, do you guys think this is a good move, buying from B&H? If not, where did you buy from? Also, I know HD is the big thing now-a-days, and when I tell my fellow classmates I'm buying an SD camera (albeit, the best one out there) they are like, "Why?? HD is the way to go!", even though they dont have anything. What I want to know is should I go HD? Or is the 100B good for the next couple of years? I dont have a Bluray burner or anything like that so I feel that HD isnt yet needed.

What do you all think?

Thanks!

B&H is a very legit store. No worries there.

I'm keeping my DVX until the thing falls apart. I don't have a need for HD at this point, so I don't see myself buying a new camera anytime soon. I'll stop shooting with it when I stop being amazed by how nice the image is.

B&H is as legit as they come. I spend a lot of money with them and have never once had a problem.

However, go HD. You may spend a little more money but look at it as an investment. In two years the SD cam probably won't be worth as much as an HD camera. I have the Canon XH A1 and love it.

The other thing to seriously consider is that Panny is discontinuing many parts for the DVX so if you break something you may not be able to get it fixed. I have that problem with my DVX, 120 hours on it and it's a paper weight.

I'll give you my address. I'll take that paper weight anyday. And as far as the discontinuing parts...i'd like to know your resource for that.

I would prefer to get it fixed to giving it away. My source is the Panasonic Parts Dept. and my trusty Panasonic repairman. If you can find me a PC Board w/ Component part number vep000y3b, I would be very appreciative. Also the XLR jack is discontinued but I found one at a shop in Ohio. Note: most Panny parts sites list the part but when you go to purchase it, it is discontinued. Two different reputable camera repair shops have told me the same thing, that they have had some problems in getting parts for the DVX. Don't get me wrong, I like the camera, the functionality, the image but durability has been an issue for me, from day 1. I just gave up and picked the camera up after it sat at the repair shop for 9 months trying to find this part.

Alright. I hear ya. Just seems strange that there are discontinued parts on a camera that is still being produced. But that's your experience...would never refute that. My experience is that I saw a 100A dropped from six feet off of the ground onto concrete and we still shot with it. Yup.

If you are able to hold off on buying something until April, I'd wait till NAB is over for 2 reasons. 1.) You might want to buy the newly announced HMC150. This sounds like it's going to be the DVX "replacement". 2.) Even if you don't buy the HMC150, this camera's inception will help drive the DVX prices EVEN lower.

B&H is the greatest place to buy equipment PERIOD! Based on price, I would have originally suggested buying your DVX from Newegg.com for $2399, but for the extra $200 at least you know you will have the piece of mind about NO warranty issues, shipping issues, etc.

Whatever you choose to do, I'm sure purchasing a DVX, HMC150, or any other HD camera will take you to the next level. Good luck!

That's quite amazingly lucky. They're all just a heavy pile of fragile parts, regardless of make. So what broke off? Something had to give.
