Buy these books, learn audio, impress girls....

The last part might not be true....

Ok, guys I don't often recommend that folks go out and spend money, but based on some of the discussions that I've seen here, I thought I would recommend a few books to get you up to speed on audio recording and mixing.

So these are all on my bookshelf and I think represent the best amount of information with the least amount of change out of your pocket.

Producing Great Sound for Digital Video

Audio Postproduction for Digital Video

Sound Design: The Expressive Power of Music, Voice and Sound Effects in Cinema

The Art of Mixing
This one is especially good as it uses visuals to describe mixing and sound placement.

I hope I wrote these links out right and that everything works.  I know that these books will cost a few bucks, but I honestly feel that if you work through them and understand what's in them - and PRACTICE - you'll be way ahead of most others out there.  There are certainly other great books, but if you digest these, you'll be all set.

BTW, Audio (like color) is a deep subject - there are tons of great books our there and these do not represent a definitive course of study. But for DV filmmakers on a budget, you'll get everything you need to get started and then some. After that, it's up to you.

If you are short on cash, use the library. They have saved me bunches.

I did that in college. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars every quarter for books, I would get the syllabus, and go to the library and spend $20 on copying the sections referred to in the syllabus. Saved tons of cash, and less strain on my back from carrying big books around.

There were a few I did buy, mainly my books for my sound engineering classes...but math books were so damn expensive, and we would only use 3 or 4 chapters out of the entire thing. What a waste of $200

Anyway...I haven't read those books listed, but I have talked with people who have used them, and I have heard they are really good. I always recommend to people that they even photocopy sections of these books that might even pertain to a current job at hand, and keep that with them.

I hate math...

They're good for what they are, you know. You would be horribly bored by them, but for a young cat just getting into audio, I think they'd be a good start.

More specifically...Trigonometry sucks...the big one. I HATED that class.

However, I loved geometry.

Trigs not so bad. It's just advanced geometry! That said I rather dislike Algebra. Useful but I dislike it. Calculus is very interesting.

I like that scene in Stand and Deliver when Lou Diamond Phillips walks into class, sees calculus on the written on the board and says "Cal-kool-us? what's cal-kool-us?"

I hated algebra as well.

What really bothered me about calc, trig and all that jazz is that your solution was still in the form of a problem with a bunch of letters mixed in with your numbers. I never felt like I was solving anything. Plus, when you have a mild form of dylexia, it's easy to screw things up.

I hate calculus. I got the limits, I had derivation quite covered, but when integrers hit the picture I knew Chemical Engeneering wasn't for me. Applying the Gauss's Law is something for very smart people. I guess I'll stick to making films (although...).

I think the only reason my calculus prof passed me in college is because she felt sorry for me. I tried and tried..went in for extra help, and still just didn't get it. I played the "I'm a senior, and this is the last quarter of my senior year, and if I don't pass this I don't graduate" bit.

LOL, I wasn't able to hold until the last quarter of my senior year, I just ran like hell after 2 (University here is 5 years)!
