The last part might not be true....
Ok, guys I don't often recommend that folks go out and spend money, but based on some of the discussions that I've seen here, I thought I would recommend a few books to get you up to speed on audio recording and mixing.
So these are all on my bookshelf and I think represent the best amount of information with the least amount of change out of your pocket.
Producing Great Sound for Digital Video
Audio Postproduction for Digital Video
Sound Design: The Expressive Power of Music, Voice and Sound Effects in Cinema
The Art of Mixing
This one is especially good as it uses visuals to describe mixing and sound placement.
I hope I wrote these links out right and that everything works. I know that these books will cost a few bucks, but I honestly feel that if you work through them and understand what's in them - and PRACTICE - you'll be way ahead of most others out there. There are certainly other great books, but if you digest these, you'll be all set.
BTW, Audio (like color) is a deep subject - there are tons of great books our there and these do not represent a definitive course of study. But for DV filmmakers on a budget, you'll get everything you need to get started and then some. After that, it's up to you.
