DOC: Burning Man 2011 project feedback

A friend asked me to edit a video for him of some Burning Man footage into a short linear video of the trip from start to finish. Little did I know if was over 13 hours of poorly shot GoPro footage that had to be edited down to 10-15 minutes.

After sorting through footage, organizing clips, and giving some serious hours into piecing this mess together I have a rough cut together. It still needs color correction, credits, more shots added, audio mix, and some general TLC but this is what I have so far.

Any input or feed back on edits, pacing, style, etc. is warmly welcomed. I feel slightly jaded from working on this piece for so long and some outside opinions would be much appreciated.

Just editing wise, I think you can cut from :10 through :44 seconds, the people are what you want to focus on, and I think without that bit, you are still good. Also, some narration about why someone might go to burning man, what it's about, might help. Even a little "And here is what happened when we got there --" helps the story along.

1:07 - 1:26 can get chopped too in my opinion.

Yeah dude, you need to add some narration and interviews in here. There isn't any story, just highlight clips of people, which are cool, but for THIS long, you need some real narrative content.

.02 cents good luck though!

I agree with the no story part. I am dying for some narration. Because they shot the whole thing with a GoPro camera and on top of that, with the waterproof casing on, all of the audio sounds like you're listening to it with aluminum cans over your ears. All of the audio is muffled and tinny sounding so I'm kind of screwed on that side of things. Without the option of narration I think I'm going to have to use titles to drive the piece.

0:10-0:44 and 1:07-1:26 are for the recipients of the video mostly. It's made for a target audience and they are going to want to see themselves. The shot with the bicycle at the :42 mark is a bit long because I'm going to add a graphic here. The groups catch phrase for the trip is "we out here" so I'm going to roto the guy on the bike so he is circling around text that reads "we out here".

Just taking a day off from watching it and watching it again now I'm seeing a lot of things that I wasn't catching before. What I really need is some good audio/narration and good night footage. Unfortunately the GoPro cameras audio is garbage and it has garbage low-light capabilities so I'm s.o.l. in that department. The video feels rushed in my opinion. I think titles are my only option to break things up and add structure. Right now it's mostly a linear highlight reel.

Thanks for the feedback
