Burning DVD's shot in 24P

Hello; I am trying to burn a dvd shot in 24P. Please help me learn the correct settings for capturing, compressing, and burning.
1. I am using FCP. I caputure the footage shot in 24P to FCP in 29.97.
2. Next, I have to export the captured clip in a QT movie. Do I export in 24 or 29.97? When I've exported in 24, I get terrible studdering and skipping in the final DVD.
3. I next compress the exported QT movie in Bitvice. Do I compress in Bitvice using the 24 frames setting or the DV NTSC 29.97 setting. When I've used the 24 frames setting, I also get studdering and skipping on the final DVD. This has happened when I've exported the QT movie using both 24 and 29.97.
4. In Bitvice, I have not checked the "interlaced" box nor the "remove interlace" box since the 24P shots were not interlaced. Is that correct?
I can burn a good DVD with the clips shot in 24P when I export the QT movie at 29.97, and compress in Bitvice at 29.97. But I had heard it was possible to burn a 24 fps DVD and that this would have better resolution since there were fewer frames to compress with 24 than when using 29.97. Am I misunderstanding something? Thanks for your help. Henry mindfulproductions.com

this is from a web :

"Because the DVD specification allows for the 23.98fps frame rate, we can produce a 24p DVD without having to add pulldown. Because a 24p DVD will have 20% less frames on it than the equivalent 24p media encoded with the addition of 3:2 pulldown, a 24p DVD should allow you to compress the media less and either produce a better quality picture or allow you to fit more high quality video on a DVD. The DVD player itself will add 3:2 pulldown on playback of a 24p DVD so that it produces a standard NTSC video signal for viewing."

I think its interesting cause it also simplifies the editing a lot.

Thanks for your help guys. I'm trying to digest it. If I have any more questions, I'll post them. Thanks again. Henry

You weren't specific about whether you shot 24p normal or 24p advanced. That's the main thing we need to know.

If you shot 24p normal, forget about making a 24p DVD. Just treat it like normal video. That's what the 24p normal mode is for.

If you shot 24p advanced, you need to go into the capture settings in FCP and choose the one that says 24p advanced pulldown removal AND make a 24 fps sequence for editing, then export to Compressor, and finally to DVDSP. Every step of the way you'll need to tell the program you're using that your footage is 24p and progressive.

Hope that helps.

Now I'm stuck in Compressor

Now I'm stuck in Compressor

Hi guys; I've been doing much of what has been suggested above. I converted my 24P FCP timeline from 29.97 to 23.98 using Cinema Tools. I then took that 23.98 sequence and exported it via a Quicktime Move to Compressor. I chose MPEG 2 for the Setting and set it at NTSC 23.98fps and Best Two pass VBR. I can get it to play correctly in Preview, but when I click on Submit, trying to compress the video and audio so I can use it in DVDSP2, I get an error message that say "Can't export batch. Unable to connect to background processes." I have unchecked the box that says "Allow job segmenting." My average bitrate is 3.5 and my maximum is 6.4. I've tried both one and two pass VBR settings. I can't seem to get past this problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Henry

QMaster isn't running. You may have to re-install it or compressor. This is the background program that compressor uses. Check the help files in compressor.

Note that you can go FCP -> Compressor and just set it to be 60min best quality.
make sure you don't go 23.98 QT to DVD Studio. It will assume 29.97 clip.

Point of clarification please

Hi Scottdvx100; A point of clarification please. Remember, I shot is 24P and need to do a 3:2 pulldown in Cinema Tools. I thought my workflow should be:
FCP to QT Movie in 29.97.
QT Movie to Cinema Tools where I do a 3:2 pulldown to 23.98
The 23.98fps sequence is now imported in DVDSP.
I then burn the DVD off this.
Above you stated that I shouldn't go 23.98 to DVDSP. If that's the case, when do I do the 3:2 pulldown in Cinema Tools. Thanks for the help. Henry

if you're doing 24p then you're correct. Remove pulldown (I think they've made this easier in FCP 5?) and edit 23.98.
To go from FCP -> DVDSP export with compressor set for best quality 60 minutes (unless you have more than 60 minutes)

Hi Scott; A question about reinstalling Compressor and/or Qmaster. I am using FCP4.5, upgraded from FCP4.01, and Compressor 2. When I reinsert the FCP4.01 install disk in my hard drive in order to reinstall Comressor, the Compressor option is grayed out. I can't choose it to redownload. I've tried to download Qmaster 2.01 from apple downloads, but that doesn't solve the problem of the error message that says "can't connect to background processes." I have thought about redownloading FCP4.5 off the apple site, but I'm afraid that will wipe out the projects I have been working on in the 4.5 I already have installed. Would redownloading 4.5 wipe out those projects? If not, will redownloading it off the apple site fix the Qmaster problem? Thanks again for all of your good help. Henry

Downloading and updating to the same version of software shouldn't affect your existing projects. (it might cause problems if it were a different version)
If you want to be extra safe make a dupe of the project itself.
Check 2-pop.com and other FCP heavy sites. People may have other suggestions.
Open up Activity monitor and see if qmaster is listed. Do a repair permisions and a restart of computer to see if thsi gets it going.

It's a question of what yo uedit at. 24p can be edited in 23.98 sequence (if you remove pulldown) or 29.97 sequence if you don't. Use the same settings in compressor and it will use the right fps.
