F5: Buring S16mm lenses on the F5/55!

The camera has a lot of potential - and despite the piping match between the Panasonic "DSLR" - and it not being professional - I side with doug on this one, but thats not to say that a pro shooting with the panasonic DSLR can't shoot better footage than an idiot with the better camera. That said, the Panasonic is stretching to give 4k, which is great for it's price point but it is NOT a pro camera. The DSLR's are great, I shoot with the 7D, 5D2 and 5D3 and I loved it.... but I hated the flash banding and jello of the rolling shutter. I hated that I couldn't get certain shots no matter what I did! - and post is not a good answer to rolling shutter- people keep trying to say it's good but it isn't' That rolling shutter is the biggest reason that people hated digital, the F35 and F55 and the motion mount on the RED's (i think, I haven't played with it) make a professional looking image that looks like film. Thats the key- then you add SLOG and having a color gamut greater than film - sure it won't be film, but wow- just wow!

The DSLR guys have a chip on their shoulder, I know because I was in that world for a while, and the truth is they keep trying to prove that their 3000 dollar camera is just as good as the 100k camera, they start talking about story, and technique which is all true, but those points don't work - because we are not comparing cameras at that point, we are comparing the people - and thats not what gear reviews are really about.... so you have to consider the two cameras in the SAME PERSONS HANDS and then it's clear to see that the F55 blows the DSLR's, ALL OF THEM out of the water.

As for DSLR's or C500 being small, I weighed all sorts of F55 parts on one of my websites here: http://accelerate-go-productions.com/f55-weight.html because I couldn't find the info anywhere online. Lets be fair, if you strip down the F55 to get into small areas, you are talking about just 3 pounds 12 oz for just the brain.. thats not bad!!! The 5D3 for instance, just the body is 2 pounds 2 oz... a different of just 1 pound 10 oz.... thats astonishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The F55 is a little bigger with a battery on it, but you can supply power via 4pin XLR, so lets say you gotta get into a tight place you can make it happen. So the argument of lightweight and small form factor is not really THAT big a difference.

There will be a day the F55 looks like an old relic, probably sooner than we all think. But global shutters are not common, and they make a huge difference. the color space is amazing, the dynamic range is amazing too - no one can say the F55 isn't one of the great ones right now... it's not bye best, but it's close. (i really want 8k F65)

Doug, I know how you feel man, the DSLR guys have a chip on their shoulder and they try to pick fights... he was being coy.. but it was nice of him to send the link ;)

+1
I just came back from an what was called an intensive course on the F55/F5 at AbelCine in NYC, The course instructor spent 6 hours reviewing the menu system on those two cameras. With the amount of questions asked and the amount of ground that had to be covered I feel that the course on the F55/5 menu system could have easily been stretched out into a two day course. The fact that there is sometimes a chain that has to be followed to allow a function to work can't be shorthanded to a side button. With those two cameras you need to know the menus system.

Hi Steven! Were you at the most recent NYC F5/F55 class last week taught by Jeff? I hope you ended up finding the class helpful and not rushed - it's tough because sometimes attendees complain that there isn't enough time to cover everything, but other times they're annoyed when the instructor spends so much time on something like the menu system.

In any case, please feel free to reach out if you ever have any questions about events, trainings, or anything else Abel-related :)

AbelCine have some great and really informative articles on their site, well worth a browse if you ever find yourself with a few minutes to spare...Sparky

Just out of interest, how would you know which S16mm would vignette on the F3/F55 using central scan -would most of them cover the sensor? Would for example this be the case with a S16mm lens with a 10-100mm range?

I have the 11-110 2.2 PL and its a Super 16 so I think it should be fine. Its also the newer version of that lens with better coatings and a more modern image. The 10-100 was 16mm only I believe which is why Optex started doing conversions to get them to cover S16.

Is the scan mode 16mm or S16mm?

those camera have digital zooms, not Center Scan
. . .
I also never said that they have "center scan". I said "center-crop"
. . .
a true center crop scan mode, and not just a ordinary digital zoom

What's the difference between center scan, center crop, and digital zoom, in how they're made and in how they look?

Do you know if you can assign the centre scan function to a button so you can switch quickly between the two?
. . .
digital punch should be right at the finger tip
. . .
I would like to have the Center Scan mode available at the touch of a button, too
. . .
a 'pop to crop button'

Why not crop in post?

neither of those cameras is a professional video camera
. . .
The G2 and G3 aren't even SLR's
. . .
that camera is not a video camera
. . .
I would need a 'proper video camera'
. . .
it is NOT a pro camera

Fighting over whether something is something, instead of just whether it does something, is slippery and neverending.
