Good ol home depot 35

so i decided its time i start to build one and see what happens.

So what im missing so far is the micro crystiline wax ( anyone heard of it? )

i went to the photo store near my house tp pick up the two uv lenses and asked for the +10 macro, but they had no clue where it could be found ( guess its one of those ebay items)

The last thing missing are the mounting rings for nikkon and canon. But i gots a question first.

If i want to make this adapter usable for both nikkon and canon lenses, will there be a problem with the length of the pvc piping? Someone told me that since the two mounts are different, there could be problems having them interchangable.

another question

ZOOM in? Whats up with the zooming in to get rid of the vignette. If one has to zoom in to almost in the mid 70's with the camera to get rid of the vignetting, and it almost gets a shallow depth of field at that range, whats the point of htese adapters? Would this not make it very difficult to shoot in tight spaces that dont allow room to frame a character unless your standing very close to them?

Hey papa, your 35mm lens does all the work, your camera lens is just there to capture what the 35mm lens 'sees'. So zooming in on your camera doesnt create shallow depth of field because you are only focusing on a flat plane ( the ground glass). 35mm lenses allow you to achieve a shallow DOF without zooming in, thats their inherent nature. Good luck with your adapter! :)

well i dont think it would be ground glass as i will be putting a thin layer of wax on one of the screens.

could i use GG instead? Are there good brands? Pros and cons of GG versus wax?

Hey again, i just used ground glass as a generic term for "whatever the image is focused on" so glass, wax, plastic, focusing screens etc. As for ground glass, im not the expert, there are heaps of threads here explaining how to make your ground glass. Wax i beleive is the one where you can end up with the most awesome focusing plane, but is also one of the hardest to acheive. Alot of people have been using focusing screens out of still cameras, check http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=45972

Yes, that is true. You will have problems because the different mounts have different flange distances. A Nikon is somewhere around 46.5 or close to that, and a Canon is shorter than that. For more info on the concept of flange distance please read here. Good luck man. Looks like you're on the right track.

then what is the alternative? Should i buy an extra piece of pvc piping and have it a little longer?

i know the one im making will be 42 mm in length (from the GG to the 35mm lens) Would this be for a nikkon or canon mount?

What would be the correct distance for the other? Man i have questions coming out the wazoo

Yes, having two different lengths of pipe would work. I've seen other alternatives to this but I can't remember exactly what they are now. I'll try to find what others have done and let you know. For the exact flange distances you can check this link. Make sure you are checking the right Canon mount. If it's an EOS it will be a different distance than an FD mount. The Nikon F-mount is 46.5, as I had guessed in my post above. Also, this distance is from the top lip of the mount to the "film plane" or for our purposes it would be the distance to the GG (or suitable alternative). If you have any other questions please throw them out. I am obviously no expert but I have learned a few things and I'm happy to pass on what I know. Good luck.

so when they say CAnon EOS is 44mm, does that mean the distance from the plate of GG to the tip of the pvc piping?

right, so from the GG to the End of the PVC piping ( which will hold the lens mount )

What is the implication is its off by .1 or .2 mm? not using laser here so it wont be exactly right.

If it's going to off then you want your actual infinity focus to be just a little closer than your lens infinity. In other words you will be sharp just short of infinity on your lens.

kk im definately going to be using a Canon FD mount. but im clueless as to how long my piece of PVC piping should be.

Papa, pick up a vernier caliper. It has a depth gauge so you can set the distance from your FD flange to GG to the standard FD distance...42mm.

As a rough guide, your total adapter length will be 42mm + GG thickness + your camera's minimum focus distance. If your min focus distance was 50mm, then the adapter's total length would be somewhere around 94mm.

He's right -- and you can shrink the minimum focus by adding a macro if need be, but then it's a tradeoff, because you add the length of the macro while compressing the minimum focus.

jeez, my eyes start rolling when i read this stuff.

Is there any difference in using a 58mm +10 or a 72mm +10?

Is that what your talking about in terms of changing the minimum focus?

another thing

What happens if the piece of my pvc piping from the mount to the GG is not exactly 42mm?

For example: I know the distance from the lens mount and the GG must be 42mm, but the distance between the first UV filter and hte Wax coated UV filter is .8mm. Im not sure if the mounting bracket gives an extra few .1 mm's or not. So what happens if i make my pvc piping exactly 42mm? What are the implications if its a few fractions of mm's off? Unusable?

Not unusable, but you may not be able to focus at infinity with your 35mm lens. Your 35mm lens focus marks won't match up either...and in some conditions you may use them to determine focus points. I would recommend keeping to .5mm of the 42mm. If you can, make sure your FD mount is adjustable so you can fine tune after.

kewlio yo, now time to order those extra parts.

is there a reason one uses a +10 72 mm? could one not use, like edweirdo, a 50 something?
