Building a desktop for AVID workstation...

I am having someone build me a computer to handle the latest AVID HD system. My goal is to have a rock solid editing system to handle the HD and have a smooth editing process. Here is what I have on the list....

Motherboard
Memory- 2G GB X2
Processor
Hard Drive- Internal + External
Operating System- Professinal or Home?
Graphics card
Sound Card
Dvd burner..what kind?
wireless router

Anything else? Is there anything I dont need that is on the list?

Thanks!

I strongly advise that anyone wanting to run Avid buys an Avid certified system. It will save you stress, heartache, and very likely money.

That being said, if you're determined to build yourself here is some elaboration on your list:

Processor - Avid supports Intel
Operating System - Has to be XP Professional. Avid doesn't support Home
Graphics Card - Stick with Nvidia
DVD Burner - What kind doesn't matter.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, I second that.

Even though I've built two Avid non-qualified systems, I can say from experience that it is best to buy a qualified workstation. My latest works great but I got lucky - and that's INCLUDING all the headaches to make it hum just right. If you're still feeling adventurous, stick to the Avid specifications as much as you can. This doesn't guarantee your system will work with Avid, but it sure does increase your chances quite a bit!

I agree. If you want a "rock solid" Avid system, get a certified one. Also, don't connect it to the internet and use a seperate machine for any business/personal use. Avid's are meant to be stand alone systems.

I have to echo the agreement of getting a certified system, or at least adhering to Avid's compatibility list. Keeping it off the internet is a good call as well. The last thing you need is to pick up adware, spyware, a virus, etc., and have it mess w/your system.

I recomend building it yourself........

Save the money for more important things like decks and monitors.

About the XP thing....i run avid on xp home. It is fine as long as you have Service Pack 2.

Here's my two-bits:

If you're editing for a living with paying clients, go certified. Best chances of stability and any problems you have are your vendor's, not yours (to some degree). Also, your clients will pay for your system, not you.

If, on the other hand, you're an adventerous hobbyist, like myself, build a custom. You'll need some trouble shooting skills and some patience, but you'll get it going. I have Avid installed on three VERY non-cert'd systems and all is well.

Two items to look out for if you build your own. IEEE 1394 should be a T.I chipset. If you have a Mojo, put it on it's own 1394 channel. Mojo doesn't play well with other stuff sharing the same 1394. The other is to go with a Soundblaster sound card. If you have an on-board RealTek, ditch it. Get an Audigy or SB 16. About $20 US should cover it.

Happy Cutting!

build your own system using avid specs. Get the most powerful nvidia card you can afford, intel xeons and an external PCIe HD.

I bought a Mac-Pro Quad and running HD Studio on it has never given me any problems. I'm still running XP Professional, too. I leapt in with the Mac Pro, since Avid doesn't yet support Mac Intel, but my computer runs everything in Avid well, certainly better than HP systems or Custom systems that I've used in the past.

Insert general disclaimer that this is unsupported by Avid here.

Also, this will not work if you build to order a Mac Pro with an ATI video card. Nvidia only.

I'm thinking about to buy a Dell Precision 390 for editing with Avid Xpress Pro but I'm even thinking about to use some Adobe software like After Effect and Photoshop on the computer. Is this not a good idea?

Shall I don't have internet on the computer I'm editing with? How shall I do too uppdate my Avid if I doesn't have intenet on the computer?

Download on a machine with internet, burn to a CD, take the CD to the Avid machine, update.
