Hahaha....I knew it.

I've had great luck with Western Digital, but I think my next large-capacity drive will be a Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 (or Plus 10). Those particular drives get glowing reviews.

Hey Slim,

Your Newegg link doesn't seem to work. Also, try searching the in (I think) Hardware section for a similar thread I made a few weeks ago. Some good info in there.

I'd definitely go with:

- SATA drives
- PCI Express vid. card
- at least 1gig of DDR2 mem.

I just had a 200 GB Plus 9 go south about three weeks ago.

Yeah, I've stopped buying Maxtors since they dropped the 3 year warranty. I. too have lost a 160GB plus 9 and a 200GB about a year old (like 2 months past the warranty).
The 160 Diamond max ones were a bad lot...approaching the reputation of those IBM "Deathstars".

My Seagate 200GB replacement is also a lot quieter and has a 5 year warranty.

Thanks so much everybody, for the help. Wadespence: Do the Maxtors have a bad rep or something? Do they break alot. Also, once I get my parts, anyone have any ideas where I can find out if I'm putting it together properly. I have a rough idea of how to do it, but am definately not confident in my abilities without further researching. Thanks so much. Tim.

Maxtors have a bad rep, yes. Or maybe the people who've had them fail are just very loud. :)

Me, I've lost Seagates, Western Digital, and Samsungs. A LOT.

In the 15 years I've been PCing, I've lost one Maxtor. And they replaced it. It just had a one year warranty, and it died at 11 months. Luckily, it died slowly, so I was able to off-load all the data.

Right now, my two main machines have 8 Maxtors in them, each machine set up with a RAID 0 and a RAID 1. Nary a hint of a problem and they are both over a year old. Hmmm...I think one of them is going on 3.

Here ya go Slim:

Teaches you the assembly of a computer and what the parts "do."

I've never built my own PC before, but it sounds like a lot of people here do it. How much money do you actually save vs. buying a name brand like Dell? Are there any other advantages to building your own PC (other than money)?

At work, we have Dells, Compaqs, HPs. Big, expensive ones with pretty cases* and oodles of innards. They get alot of use, 24/7 and all that.

They break. A lot. A whole lot.

At home, I have home-built (mostly from barebones gotten from Aberdeen and added to as needed). The oldest is from 1997. I've never had a major malfunction aside from the hard drives failing. And those failures were caused by power slams (off-on-off-on...lovely German power grid).

Me? I'd never buy a "brand name".

Dan

*be careful of brand name cases & hardware. A lot of times they do silly things like make connectors and mounting styles (especially hardrives) proprietary. Sometimes they even use proprietary RAM....lotsa luck replacing or upgrading.

Hmm, I couldn't access that link either. But I searched for "tims" and found your list. lol, Looks pretty similar to mine.

Don't forget to get a case! As for a video card, I'm gonna go with a 256mb 6800gt. It's in my price range, 256mb, and has great reviews. But I'm going to be doing some gaming (Counterstrike, battlefield), while I'm not sure if you will be.

Okay guys....We are looking into a couple of things and one of the systems we are looking into is this one:

http://www.velocitymicro.com/wizard.php?iid=6&PHPSESSID=1f8c5d503ab6da5ec63f161830c69792

The unit shown for $1965.00 isn't the one I'm getting, I made the following changes:
Processor: Changed it from the 630 to a 640
Hard Drive 1: 400GB Hitachi 7200 rpm SATA/150, 8MB
Also, for Hard Drive 2: the same one.

With those changes, it comes out to $2370.00

Can someone please tell me the pros, cons, of this system. How upgradeable is this system? Any changes you would make? Thanks, Tim.
