Ugh. I'm a die hard Btvs fan. Everyone I know who loved the television series is banning this movie should it come about as listed. It will physically pain me not to see a movie about Buffy and/or vampire slayage, but I have to draw the line on this one. No Joss, no Sarah, no Willow, no Xander, no Faith, no me watchy.

I'll wait until it's in the $5.99 bin, used, at Blockbuster.

AND... no Angel, no Spike.
Jeeeeez.

The only little bit of hope in that article:
The producers do not rule out Whedon's involvement but have not yet reached out to him.

EDITED TO ADD:
Just realized that article is 5 months old... so who knows what's happened since.

Yeah I heard of this a while back.

Reminds me of the proposed battlestar galactica film that has nothing to do with the re-vamp, only the original series.

You invest so much into these worlds, and there's only really one true adaptation, but they want to go back to the old stuff. Makes no sense.

Yeah, and I mean, remaking something once is understandable; doing it for a third time, and for no understandable purpose...? I seriously doubt Sarah Michelle Gellar would be against reprising her role, and she's still *fit*, even after dropping the kid.

This is just bizarre and makes no sense. They can't possibly think it will HURT their ticket sales by not using the old cast. It's not like an Xfiles movie or something. People that watch vampire movies will see the movie regardless -- and, let's face it, people who watch vampire movies probably watch Buffy (either when it was airing or since on DVD). And Willow, Angel and Faith all have their own shows now; they'd also be getting the following from there as well.

Just bizarre...

They could've kept the cast of the TV show and come up with a juicy supporting character that a big star could play. That way they have the big movie star's name on the posters/trailers while not pissing off the dedicated Buffy fans.

Yeah, there's a million ways they could do it. I think the problem is they think that using the original cast will "hurt" getting the new audience in there. But it's just absurd. The original Buffy did pretty miserably at the box office, there's no reason to think a remake of a ten year old property would do any better. It's not like Dawn of the Dead or something where budget made all the difference (for better or worse, depending). The original Buffy story can't really be much more of a story regardless of budget.

However, if you look at Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight which Joss produces via DarkHorse, there's TONS of areas for big budget Hollywood movie goodness.

For christy's sake they did a friggin Sex and the City movie and that knocked it out of the park and now they're filming a sequel! How do you think the movie would have done had they based it on the original book that Sex in the City was based on instead of basing it on the series? The whole thing just dumbfounds me.

Unless they come out and say specifically that Joss, Sarah and the rest of the cast want nothing whatsoever to do with Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which will never happen), they will have an epic bomb on their hands and will only be burying the only marketable thing about Buffy -- the televised incarnation of it.

SMG has gone on record as not wanting to do any more Buffy stuff. Which is kind of silly of her considering what a great and wide-ranging role it was. Very few roles for women in TV as good as that role was. She got to be ingenue, hero, mother, sister, victim, friend, all of it.

But yeah, in general the idea of the people who messed it up the first time around, doing it again, is offensive. They will likely have to bring Whedon in again anyway to save it.

Good example.

I almost wonder if they looked at Serenity and thought that Joss Whedon wouldn't be able to produce or direct a successful Buffy feature film. Of course, there is a big difference between the two. Buffy has been on for many years and is considered a success, where Firefly was a cancelled TV series that didn't even technically run for its entire 13 episodes (not until DVD).

Plus, Buffy would have the whole vampire thing going for it to attract Twilight, True Blood, and other vampire fans who haven't yet seen the TV series. But I wonder if they looked at Serenity's poor box office performance and decided it would be too risky. Also, the people producing this might be thinking that if this reboot is successful, they'll have more freedom for sequels and will in essence hold all the cards.

Sucks though, because between this and Star Trek's recasting for the reboot, no TV show will be sacred if Buffy makes big bucks. There has already been talk about doing the same type of reboot with Battlestar Galactica, and that series had it's TV re-imagining end only about six months ago. Now they already want another remake of it. What's next, new casts and crews for feature film reboots of Mad Men, Lost, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, CSI, X-Files, Twin Peaks, Different Strokes (CGI Gary Coleman), or any other classic or acclaimed TV series?
