Buffalo WMV HD Player

Just hooked up my Buffalo WMV HD player to my DLP.
It plays back WMV HD files that I copied to a DVD-R,
you have to set-up the player for 16:9 and I had to
manually set the TV to the size I wanted but it does
playback WMV HD in all it's glory. Barry's Hawaii stuff looks good
at 52". I didn't have a spare component cable so I was only viewing from S-video but it looks good.
This player has networking capabilites and I tried for an hour to get that working but I am not an IT guy and have no real intention of using this player for that function anyway. It will also play your DVD's as well. The remote is good and for $250 it serves my purpose.

Updated the software and got the network function working.
It is really cool. Streaming wirelessly from my PC to my DVD recorder.
I can dump a WMV HD file to DVD for those clients who cannot play WMV HD. Of course its only SD. Right now I am exporting a .mov from FCP and making a WMV HD file in Vegas. Flip 4 Mac is software that allows you direct export from FCP to WMV HD. Of course you can always get Edius and export a WMV HD direct on a PC.

Won't BluRay players be able to play WMV HD and h.264 files from DVD?

I think so, the prices for Blu-Ray will probably be $1500 to start.
So $250 is OK for a saving $750 or so for now.

I just ordered one of these for exactly this purpose. To view my HVX200 footage via wmv files or HD mpg files until suitable Blueray and HD DVD devices catch on in the marketplace.

However I have to ask one question about your statement above....how can you be viewing HD out of the Svideo jack? I was under the impression component cables were the only analog medium to pass HD through them. I am guessing that the Svideo connector is a downsampled version of the HD material. I think that is how it works. Can anyone enlighten us? I have component cables ready and waiting for when my Link theater arrives on Monday.

What bitrates have you used for your wmv files? I heard the player tops out at around 20000kbs. Also....have you tried any 720p mpg streams yet? I heard it works great. The Avel Linkplayer (competition to the buffalo unit) even has direct support for .m2t files from the JVC hd100 so you can burn to disk and play 24P 720 directly...or stream it from you PC so you don't even have to burn!

This thing has a lot of options!

You are probably right, still looks really good with Svid cable.
Need an excuse to go to Radio Shack anyway!!
