Budget Bags

Hello all,

I have a very small budget at the moment (£40) and need a case of some description for the HMC151E.

I know it's a small budget, much smaller than it should be, but it's all I have and I would prefer to get something rather than nothing.

It needs to tick these boxes as well:

  • Must cost no more than £40 ($61)
  • The camera needs to fit in it (obviously)
  • It would be nice to have space for batteries and power leads
  • It MUST be available in the UK (I don't want to have to pay import duty)
I was looking at the Maplin cases. None of them are quite the right size but they're close to what I'm after. It doesn't even matter if it's not a proper camera case. If it will do the job then I will consider it.

There must be something out there!

You may want to place a wanted ad in the marketplace. I'm sure you could find something there.

Varizoom has what looks to be a decent bag for $90 which is a little more than your budget. Not sure of its UK availability.

Thanks for that, I have posted. I'm not sure it will do any good though.

In the mean time, does anyone else have any other suggestions?

I went to my local Samsonite Outlet store - they generally sell higher-end suitcases for professionals, but I got lucky and found a great little "bag" case on sale for $50. The camera fits pretty snugly, and after a trip to the fabric store to add some padding, I'm good to go.

It's a bit on the small side, but it'll hold me over until I can earn enough with it to afford something nice like a Pelican case.

You can do it, a professional I work with does exactly that. He bought a suitcase, filled it with a huge brick of foam and made a cutout for his camera + accessories. He had one for his XL-2 and a smaller one for his GL-2.

It was one of those suitcases that is zippered on the side, so you can open the whole front easily like a book. For the environments we filmed in (in-house videos - carpeting/flat surfaces everywhere), the rolling wheels were a big plus.

Personally I go off the beaten path a bit more and I appreciate the weight savings of not having the wheels + T bar, and prefer to sling it over my shoulder than drag it behind me.

That's still to expensive I'm afraid, once you take import duty and postage costs in to account. That's why I need to find somewhere in the UK.

I like the idea of the Samsonite actually but we don't have stores like that in the UK - not in Gloucester anyway. I shall be going around the local army/camping and luggage stores with a tape measure come the weekend though.
