Budget: 8045 for color?

Can I use an SD monitor like a Sony 8045 (or a 14" Sony at home) to judge color on my HVX HD footage and also have a Dell side by side for focus and overall resolution.
I realise that its downrezed, but is the color itself pretty close to what it is in HD?
The Dell color is not satisfactory, but I'm reluctant to spring for a 17" Panasonic yet.
How good is the Marshall for color?

This is a great question. I've been using mine with both an NTSC field monitor and the Dell, and you're right --- the Dell cannot be trusted on Color. I've kinda been assuming that the NTSC is better for color, but I really don't know. I'm still trying to figure out how to monitor my footage from FCP out of my G4 (see my thread on monitoring HVX footage), so I can't really say at this point. If anyone can answer this, I'd love to know.
P.S.: Are you shooting with the HVX already? If not, you should know that so far, I haven't found a way to see the image on both monitors. When the Dell is hooked up for HD, the S-Video signal is cutoff and will only show when I unplug the component cable.

I'm in Philadelphia.

But, I haven't tried it, but I would suspect this is not that good of an idea. SD uses 601 colorspace, HD uses 709, I doubt you're going to get accurate color monitoring for HD by using the SD outputs. If you're shooting HD for SD downrez then maybe it'd be okay, but it's always better to use the right tool for the job.

Damn! That's not what I was hoping you would say.

I'll have to do some comparisons with my Buddy's Panasonic.

I know I don't like the Dell for color.

Where could I find a good explanation of the difference between 601 & 709 color space and infact what colr space actually means.

This brings up a related issue then for me.
Do color space differences have somethng to do withthe difference between SD Normal and HD Normal Matrixes.
Are they perhaps designed to look similar on theior ultimate monitors. HD Normal seems to have a lower gamma at first glance.

Oh well I guess i need to do some testing.
maybe 2 HVX's on the same scenefile. One in SD the other in HD going to respective monitors
Also one HVX & a Panasonic 17" vs 8045.
Of course, find two 8045's that look the same.....
