So I helped out on a film yesterday and did BTS with my Canon T3i.

The one thing I had to be aware of was the camera noise made each time a pic was taken. So I couldn't shoot pics during the scenes but could roll some video. The only thing that sucked is if I forgot to turn the camera off before the scene started because sometimes it would turn off after a period of unuse.

It got me thinking about a camera blimp and found this link on a DIY project.

I was thinking, couldn't I get just a Canon powershot which does 12mb files and build it into a diy camera blimp? Here is the camera. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1000474-REG/canon_8410b001_powershot_sx170_is_digital.html

16MB file is pretty good right?

I think moving my t3i into and out of the blimp would be annoying. Especially, if I wanted to grab video.

Just curious if anyone had any thoughts. I had a good time doing BTS. Would be cool to keep doing it.

Obviously your not going to get the same image quality from a powershot as compared to a dslr. The size of the file is only a reflection of how many megapixels the image is (and the file compression..raw/jpeg, ect)

For BTS work, a mirror-less camera is usually preferred for noise reasons. Look into the eos m, fuji or Leica mirror-less cameras. The G16 is pretty nice if your looking for something that can fit in a pocket with retractable lens and has a good amount of manual control (there are some drawbacks like no manual video control, poor low light compared to larger sensor cameras and a somewhat hobbyist layed out menu and features)
 
drapeama, didn't know ML did that. Thanks for the suggestion. I got a great deal on the T3i was able to get the diamond warranty for a cheap price. I don't want to mess with the warranty.

I wonder if I can get a cheap T2i.
 
Ebay has plenty of T2i bodies. Got my son one mast xmas, very affordable.

I may have to get one myself for the true HDR video via ML - great for real estate. Sold mine years ago, this would mean I've bought 3 of the damn things...
 
There are on set photographers that use the Fuji X100s with great success and it is so quiet that it uses a leaf shutter. Now that the x100T is out, that may be a option, but the picture quality the fuji produces is outstanding, even at jpeg.
