BTS- Long Lens Work

We were doing a car scene- shot of the rig in basic configuration. FS100, Solid Camera PL, Canon 600 (PL), MB28, TV Logic and Marshall monitors, Ultralite arms, FS100B.JPGAB bricks, O'Connor 1030HDS. And of course our first AC, Andrew.

Are you...compensating? Haha, i'd need to upgrade my tripod to use that! Still, it would be cool to have just to have. Was this shot conceived just to have an excuse to use the lens?

I suspect the Andromeda galaxy looks good through that!

What do you call that rig, Hubble?

It is worth remembering that telephotos represent dissapointing magnification considering thier mass

I have a 400 2.8 and honestly I think the magnification is about the same as my EX1

Unlike the EX1 I am not strong enought to carry my 400/satchler more than 1/2 a mile down the beach

Sorry guys, it's all about the optical qualities of long focal lengths and narrative filmmaking. Nothing to do with magnification factors over different sensor size.

Care to expand on that?

Perhaps post a screen shot that shows the qualities you're after.

Thanks

Absolutely. A really interesting 'cinematic' perspecitve no doubt (Tinker Taylor - airfield anyone ?)

Just not the tool IMO if you want to film andromeda or the next city..

The unspoken point of my posts of late- the FS100 is deemed good enough to use on episodic narrative TV. Not my first choice- but it is good enough. I'm dp'ing a new Nickelodeon teen action show. Super low budget, but we're always looking to add elements of "cool", and a full lens tool kit helps. A lot.

Humour by-pass?

Of couse not - Im all humour :) - I was just broadening the chat of why you would/would not choose such a set up

For example such a lens costs maybe the same as a used EX3 which paired with an 80-200 (that an FS100 owner may already own) would create a much more handleable package for 'getting close'

I own a 400/2.8 and a 600/4 and am very aware that shooting video with them is technically and physically demanding in the extreme.. and also has a very special look

'Target aquisition' can also be a problem if you are trying to shoot something on a featurelss background (birds in the sky surfers on the sea) - its easier to aquire then zoom in

Karl - its great that you are using the camera for a larger project - love the blog

I think people know the difference between a long lens and a telescope, no? :)

But thanks for the TTSS still that explained the look of the long lens nicely.
