BT-LH80W Hand held?

I have been looking at picking up the BT-LH80W but do a lot of hand held work. The specs say it weighs 3.3 pounds. It seems like that would be quite a chunk of weight hanging off the side of the cam.

Does any one out there have any experience with it hand held?

I'd really like a decent VF so if anyone has other suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have done it before, it is very heavy with everything else on there. I am trying to develop a color lcd/evf for a better picture (with color!) but the R&D is so freaking expensive I may never actually get around to it.

The stock VF is fine and many have used the one from the sdx900 (VF20 16:9 2")

But for me the stock viewfinder is fine for most things.

Placing where the view finder is works great on tripod, but really is unwieldy on the shoulder. I use the VF a bit... its a little hard to see to see at times, but mostly usable. TUrn peaking to max.

Almost all the shooting I do is handheld/run and gun. I've had pretty good luck with the VF and the stock LCD but I have come back with shots that I thought were in focus but they turned out to be a little soft.

I really wish there was another VF option besides the VF20 16:9 2"

Maybe Hunter will make one for us?

I am working on it actually. Think of it more as a color video tap...THE FOLLOWING IS PURE SPECULATION. This is a side project, if it works out great. If not than I just blew more money on another diy project!

Right now the best I can do is a color micro tft (with basic image adjustments like contrast and brightness) with a resolution of around 640x380ish (about the same asyour HVX/HPX lcd but a lot smaller and brighter)

It mounts to the threads on your top handle via a magic arm. And it runs on camera fed power and video (not the VF hook up) You can move it all around or even mount it apart from the camera as long as you still have the video feed.

But if your looking for critical focus and waveform...My project wont do the trick. Its just more of a framing viewfinder with color (if you can focus off of the lcd, you can focus with this) It would help you if you had a handheld camera and 35mm adapter though.

Just an mspaint mock up:

Again, this is just a side project and I am not promising a completed product for purchase. Just something to do for fun. What do you think?

This looks pretty interesting Hunter. I think I understand your mock up here... You would look into the orange bit? The advantage would be better color reproduction over the built in LCD?

Peaking! OMG!
Thanks Noel!!! I had mine turned mostly down. It's like a whole new VF.

Yeah, Peaking turns your hpx500 viewfinder into a mini-hd monitor.

About my mock-up, it is just for fun. The orange bit isnt really orange, its a camos for your eye. It attaches by a magic arm (or nooga arm) to any standard thread on your camera or anywhere for that manner. The main advantage would be for the operator to see color! and if you had no camera that took a VF (like handheld cameras), you could use it to actually shoulder your 35mm adapter rig.

I will wee what kind of results I get...
