Broken, or am I missing a setting?

We recently had some audio problems with one of our rental DVX100A's--the RCA audio outputs were not sending a signal, although audio was being recorded to the tape (thank God :) ). It just came back from repair, and it seems to have the same problem. There isn't some sort of setting that I'm missing in the camera, is there? Something that would keep the audio (and only the audio--the video is still fine) from going out (even though it's playing on the built-in speaker)? Or did the alleged repair just not fix the problem?

The original problem was noticed using it live. My current problem is in VCR mode. I've tweaked every menu setting I can find with nothing changing, and audio came out of the Firewire just fine (which was really the point of the whole exercise, I only noticed the RCA jack problem when I was trying to preview my tape footage on a TV).

I don't think that audio is hot in live mode. I had to do a shoot a couple months ago where I fed XLR into the camera, and though I could monitor sound with headphones, I couldn't feed our backup recording decks with the sound from the camera.

Hmmm... my experience is that the audio RCAs are always hot just as the video RCA and firewire are. I use the RCA audio jacks to return the audio back to my field mixer so I can check what the DVX (both A and B models) is receiving by just flipping a switch on my mixer.

Isn't there a menu setting for controlling AV in/out if you want the DVX to record a AV signal in? I've never done it myself so maybe I'm thinking of another camera. I don't have my DVX with me to look.

If someone plugged some AC-powered speakers (i.e. PC speakers) into those jacks, they may be fried. I did that on my laptop and somehow fried its audio amplifier. The speakers were powered on as I was plugging in the audio cable and saw the spark.

PerroneFord: I've done several live events using the 100A's RCA outs and always had them live. In fact, on the show that the problem with this particular camera was noticed, there was another working just fine in the next room. It's overkill, granted, but they make a nice "focus group" camera to feed closed-circuit into a TV somewhere else, especially with UTP transmitter/receivers... :)

TeleDan: Yeah, that's the sort of setting I was wondering about. I don't think the DVX has anything like that (although I had a JVC consumer cam that did), and I would think that if it did, it would apply to video as well, unless it was something like an audio dub setting. I know there's a setting to set whether it's using the A/V jacks or the mic jacks to audio-dub--that might be worth a second look, now that I think about it...
