broken iris?

anyone have this problem?
it's definitely on Manual... but the Iris goes haywire everytime I move it. It keeps wanting to decrease light, as I raise it up. sometimes i have to fight it or press auto to get it to proper exposure. i've had similar problems with the G-1 in the past so I'm assuming the worst... I must've broke my DVX. :(

any thoughts?

thank you...

I've heard of people having problems like this and they had some dirt in the iris wheel. Maybe that could be part of the problem?

the iris wheel is a pot just like a volume pot so yes, it may have some dust which would cause this type of problem. you can get some spray that is safe for electronics. i have to do this often on my audio gear. the best stuff i have found is called "QD electronic cleaner". it comes in an aerosal can the same size as spray paint. any ace hardware should have it. use the little tube that comes with it and spray a couple of squirts in the crack next to the iris knob. then rotate the knob for a minute to spread the cleaner and work out the dirt. just make sure the battery is out of the dvx and give it an hour to completely dry before powering up just to be extra safe. however, i have sprayed pots with the gear turned on many times with no consequence. the fluid is supposed to be non-conductive and if you spray on a flat surface you will see that it evaporates quickly.

I did get my dvx fall and trample on the beach sand before...
thanks horse and cheese, I appreciate it.

This link has saved me a lot of trouble. I was convinced I was going to have send my DVX back to Panasonic, but the QD Cleaner made everything work like new. Thanks cheese.

I experienced the same problem and had it professionally cleaned, $300. I asked the tech about the problem and he said it was just dirty, very dirty. I’d been on the road.

Just wanted to chime in and say that the QD Electronic Cleaner works really great. I just sprayed it about 2 hours ago and did a check and I can't re-create the iris jumping problem.

Many thanks to cheezweezl for the tip!

As a heads up to anyone in Toronto - you can find QD Electronic Cleaner at Home Hardware.
