Broken Buttons?

I loaned out my HVX this past weekend.
Now back in my hands, I am having trouble with some of the buttons. I can't seem to get any of the top row black buttons on the inside of my LCD to work. These are the color bars button, and the three shutter speed buttons.

I am wondering if the person who used my camera fiddled with the settings so that these buttons won't toggle for some reason, or if these buttons are now broken.

Any suggestions on how to figure this out?

Hopefully, the loanee was a friend and will be straight with you. I'm not aware of any settings that can change the function of tose buttons. Perhaps liquid was spilled on them?
 
If all else fails, try resetting the camera by sticking a straightened paper clip into the small hole next to the BARS button, and remove the battery from the camera for an hour. But I have a gut feeling it won't help.
