BROADCAST MONITORS - Are they accurate?

Just started using my broadcast monitor with my HVX200. And I love what I see in my monitor. Spent all my money on the camera so I cant afford a HD big screen tv to view my work. All I have is my SD tv and broadcast monitor. On my SD tv after i burn to dvd it looks crappy (could be my methods for burning, having figured it all out yet) My questions is this.

can i judge my image from what i see on my properly calibrated trinitron sony broadcast monitor?

thanks everyone

Hi Pimp:

Give me a model number, condition the monitor is in (are you the orginal owner?). When was the last time it was calibrated and who calibrated it? Have you set it up correctly?

Lot of variables here as far as are you seeing what is really there.

i am almost afraid of saying.

with toast. havent figured the proper settings for compression either so i dont use that either. All i do is export from final cut and drag and drop on toast.

i am not a very technical person

as to your question puredrifting the model number is SONY TRINITRON COLOR VIDEO MONITOR PVM-14L1. I believe i have it on the right settings. i mean the footage looks great on it. i just hope its not misleading.

PUREDRIFTING you are based in LA?

Hi PIMP don't be embarressed about saying how you do it. We all have to learn from the begining and a forum like this should never be intimidating to those starting out.

Once you are done in FCP, export to Compressor and then onto DVDStudio Pro.
If you are unsure how to use these programs, I highly recommend going to Lynda.com and subscribing for a month. Larry Jordan is the exper there and his tutorials for FCP, Compressor, Soundtrack Pro, DVDSP and Livetype will have you up and running like an expert in no time at all.

I didn't have a clue how to use Livetype but after doing his tutorial I was up and running in no time.

great post steve. just cuz hes got an hvx doesnt mean he cant ask the basics. keep at it PIMP

I read a past post by BARRY in which he states that HD is the only viable way of viewing hvx footage. But right now i dont have a hd monitor. I have a broadcast monitor. i dont need it to judge focus, i just need it to judge video noise and grain. are these monitors good enough just to judge that?

Hi Pimp:

The model of Sony that you have is far from a broadcast monitor, it's more like a low end industrial monitor. It is what it is, no problem. Most of the Sony broadcast monitors begin with the letters BVM and cost about what an SUV costs.

You are correct, viewing HD material on an SD monitor does not really give you a real idea of what it will look like in HD but it does give you a good idea as to what it will look like on a consumer SD television.

If you really want to see what your audience with HD monitors sees, you must eventually invest in a decent HD monitor like the Panasonic 1700. Unfortunately CRTs are going the way of the dodo and will soon disappear. It's tough for people who have worked decades with accurate CRTs to cede to just winging it with LCDs and Plasmas but it's a problem that we are all facing and will have to struggle with for a few more years before the technology becomes standardized and accurate.

As far as video noise and grain, no, your SD monitor is not showing all that is there in your HD signal. And focus is a big deal, stuff that looks perfectly acceptable on your SD monitor may look radically soft on an HD set. Just the way of the world, my friend. If you want to work in HD, you have to go all of the way.

Yes, I am based in LA.

Best,

Dan
