Brevis softens hvx200

Is it just me or do these 35mm adaptors soften the image of the hvx200? There is are a lot of shots that look cool. But every once in a while the image seems a little too soft. i ve seen footage from experience dps and even there i saw a softness. Is that just part of the price you pay for getting shallow depth of field.?

Gotta shoot in the slr lens sweet spot, wide open will be soft. Also I believe a lot of people with adaptor (and even stock HVX) turn the detail up.

Keep in mind film looks soft so sometimes the dp might have wanted the HD footage to be soft too.

another thing you have to consider is that all lenses have unique characteristics... as do ALL the various adapters...

Adapter calibration needs to be done right; if the user hasn't properly focused on the ground glass then all the footage will appear soft.

When I used the mini35 I noticed that it introduced noticeable softening -- and that was on a standard-def DVX, not even high-def!

But the latest crop of adapters can be extremely sharp. Look at Steven Dempsey's footage from his XHA1 and Letus Extreme; I havent pixel-obsessed over it but from just watching it, it looks plenty sharp.

No adapter will produce a sharper image than stock. There will invariably be a little softening, because you're photographing through a ground glass, basically a rear projection. But it's surprising how amazingly sharp the best of the adapters are.

I have to agree that with a fairly recently-purchased adapter, you can can get a great image. Sure, you lose a little "stock" clarity from the HVX but that's one of the tradeoffs.

The biggest problem I've seen is "always" back-focus. I'm an M2 and Brevis user. It is such a precise setting and has to be checked often during a shoot.

Every time I do a camera move, I reset BF (Because of the vibration "and" the chance that I may, or my AC, may have bumped something). Also, I've noticed the BF will drift with temperature change. So, check BF periodically....I don't tape my focus ring because of the variation in temperature causes you to need to re-set BF anyway.

Hope this helps!
