breaking down scene file settings

I have Barry Green's book and the DVX100a manual...but have not yet found a breakdown of the factory pre-sets for the scene files. That is, those scene files for FLUO or SPARK have certain settings. Short of going through each one and writing it all down, one after the other, I thought there would be a chart to show the settings for these factory pre-set scene files (e.g., Detail Level +2, etc.).

Why do you need to write them down? If it is so that you can go back to the original settings, all you need to do is to reset the camera and that will bring you back to the settings.

BTW- I am not aware of anywhere that lists the original settings, sorry I couldn't be more of a help.

Yes, I realize you can switch back to the original factory pre-sets. Reason I thought it would useful is it's a good reference for how to start making one's own tweaks/scene file settings. For example, I'd like to see at a glance what the Fluorescent scene file settings are so that I can see what they did to compensate for those conditions. I can compare them to other settings for, say, the settings for shooting at dusk. Hey, by this point, I have written most of them down. But I still think it's something that would be useful for people to have easy reference to...and an explanation of WHY those settings were chosen for such conditions would be even better. For example, I'd love to know why the factory pre-sets for Scene File 6 (24p) and Scene File 7 (24p Advanced) are so different, even though they're presumably both for "film look". Those differences are key to knowing how to tweak your own camera for your own look/particular conditions. I've learned a heck of a lot since buying my DVX twelve days ago...but I've found no detailed info on this particular subject.

Oh yes. Beloved, all powerful god named Google. I get one billion responses. None of them quite on point. Gotta love it.

Thank you Marco! Your manual does have some extra info. Unfortunately, it doesn't specifically go into the detail of the Scene File settings I was looking for. The manual (and Barry Green's book) do describe each of the menu items that can be tweaked (Chroma level, etc.) but it doesn't say WHAT those specific levels are in each scene file setting or why. For example in 24P Advanced mode, Mater Pedestal is at minus 5, but in regular 24P mode it's at 0. One day I'll figure it all out. ;-)

Have you watched the DVD that accompanies the book? There's a segment on there that shows each menu setting, and demonstrates them at their minimum and maximum, so it's very easy to see how the settings are affecting the picture.

Those are good questions. As the why questions are always better then the what/how questions. A monkey can repeat the same action over and over, so knowing how to do something is not always the best method. Knowing why allows you greater freedom to take that knowledge and apply it else where.

If you do find the answer let me konw as I would be interested as well.

BTW- Barry's book is great. If you don't have it, get it! I love having easy access to seeing the result of the settings, as well as all the other useful info on there.

Barry, your book is INDISPENSIBLE. It really should come with the camera! (And I know it often does in the U.S., but not so in Canada). Anyway, I'd be lost without your book. However, as detailed a description as you give in the book and DVD about the different menu settings, it's still hard for me to understand why certain settings are used in the factory pre-set scene files. Obviously, these settings can be tweaked in a variety of conditions for different effects/conditions, and Panasonic has combined these choices in the pre-set scene files. I would like to know exactly WHY they chose them. Maybe it's just about playing with settings and finding out for ourselves. But the fact that the Master Pedestal changes certain resolution doesn't really tell me under what conditions I should be making these changes for certain effects, nor why the factory pre-sets have chosen those specific settings. I guess the best example I can give for my confusion/interest is the different settings on 24p and 24p Advanced setting. Those scene files are actually set quite differently by Panasonic. Yet they're supposed to both be for a "film effect." Even Barry's book suggests those frame rate modes are almost the same in look, and yet still the menu settings for things like Chroma Level and Detail are quite different. Obviously, Panasonic is trying to accomplish something different between these two settings to maximize the frame rate selected, and I would like to know why. It would help me better understand the settings themselves. Anyway, ultimately, it's probably just trial and error and getting to know them for myself as a new camera user. At least Barry's book tells me what they ARE (the Panasonic manual does nothing of the kind). I just have to figure out the real practical situations in which I'd want to change them and how.

Cheers!

Sean
