I shot this the day after I received my 5d to test it out, and to see how well I could integrate some light VFX. As you can probably see from the thumbnail below, it's a bit ridiculous.

edit: if the embed doesn't work, here's a direct link to the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fx3M9EfLULI

Lenses: Nikon 50mm f1.4, 28mm f2.8

The whole film was shot at f2.8 between 1000 and 2000 ISO. No additional lights were set up, I simply used natural light from outside and the overhead lighting that was in place.

Colors and lighting looks flat , also seems you shot it pretty wide open which just makes everything look out of focus. VFX were cool and story line was descent, audio was horrible though ( more so the sound fx).

Overall I would say the strongest point is the script with all of the technicals being week. Use more lighting, shoot at higher f stop, grade better or choose a different color profile & please get some better stock sound or create your own. While being what seems like somewhat of a parody the sound really killed it for me. I think you have a great basis to start just need to execute technically better.

Thanks for the detailed critique vision_filmz. I can't say I disagree with you on some aspects as I used no additional lighting and that particular color grade did mute the colors quite a bit.

Were the gunshot SFX in particular what killed it for you? Just curious, seeing as I'm next planning to shoot a more action oriented short, and will be utilizing quite a few more gunshot sfx. I also ask because some of the sound effects (such as the initial gun cock which is ridiculously way too loud and comes from a massive rifle not a pistol) were just in there as temp sounds until I showed a few people the rough draft and got an unexpected laugh out of it and just decided to keep it in.

Anyways, thanks for watching, and for the critique.

I think it was a fun little test, but as some of the others stated. it just looks mushy flat, and very unapealing,(NOT YOUR WORK, THE IMAGE) I like 5d2 footage sooo much better than 5d3 footage, dont ask me why. It just looks a lot better to me. But thats not to say I have seen a lot OF 5D3 footage, after seeing the initial test by Canon of the guys playing ball on bikes, I usually make it a point to avoid 5d3 threads. After seeing sean mcclouds music vid yesterday shot on the gh2, shows how superior the gh2 really is. There's no comparison really. Anyways, glad your shooting having fun, its about using the tools you have, and at least your doing that, and not shooting test charts. keep up the good work!!!

haha, you can be assured that I'll never upload a test chart video. And to be fair to the mk3, I did shoot this under completely default lighting in a small and mostly dull room. I'm scouting for interesting locations right now for the next shoot, so it will hopefully be a bit more appealing. Regardless, thanks for the input, I appreciate it!

Because of the comments about Mk3 image quality I thought I would share this.
Philip Bloom had similar issues and provided work arounds. They showed quite an improvement.

Watch here.

Much appreciated. The image really does look quite a bit better. I'll be trying that out for sure the next time I edit. Thanks!

Have you thought about using Squib/blanks setup? That is what I use for my gun scenes. The blood looks real as it explodes out of the body and we use blanks in the gun making the flash from the gun real looking.

@JoeButch probably not that much, but we just wanted a bit of extra sizzle. Yeah, it's not like you really need anything additional with the amount of fat bacon has on its own.

@New_Zealand I'd love to try that in the future. This video just had such a quick turnaround time: wrote the thing / got the camera on Friday, filmed on Saturday, that it wasn't feasible to do. That, and I also did want to experiment with adding VFX in post. That being said, the next time I do something a bit more serious I absolutely want to go practical with it.

Here is some footage from the setup for the squib and gun scenes in a few of my films. I don't have a clue how to embed the video so here is the link.

The first video is the squib setup and a real gun flash coming out of the gun and not computer added:

This is our main actress Ngakorowai (Patty) handling a gun for the very first time in my latest film 'TUKINO':
