Breakaway and Flight 208

Hi. Just joined so I figured I'd give you a link to some of my older films. I'm a 15 year old filmmaker from Omaha. My website is www.royermedia.com. Breakaway has its own page and Flight 208 (which is really old) is on the "other films" page. They're not nearly as good as what Im working on now, but Id like some advice for my next movies. Thanks.

welcome...i checked your site...i like the layout, seems like you know some Photoshop as well.

I'll check out some of your movies...i started watching the racing one...but i got pulled away at work.'

welcome!

I moved Flight 208 to the "Other Films" section because it is drastically lower quality then Breakaway. By the way I just read that the purpose of this section is to be more of a production journal. I'll create one for my next movie soon and update it every few weeks.

Yeah I just read that after I had already posted. Anyway, can I get some advice for my next movies? I plan on making three new short movies in 2008, so its a bit more of a challenge than once a year (my previous release schedule).

Advice... sure.

You're fifteen right? Make sure that you make a film about what you know. Do not cast kids in roles that are meant for adults. Most people will stop watching right there.

Think "Stand by Me" only a little older. Write something that could possibly happen to you or your age group. Do that first, then run the script by a few people here and get some honest opinions. Once you have that done... start shooting like crazy!

Good luck!

Mike

BTW, I just watched Breakaway. You can ignore my advice. You tackled that story quite well. If it wasn't for the wind and audio issues it would have been pretty damn good. Try to get some good actors as well.

A few 1967 continuity errors but very good overall.

Considering your age... that was pretty brilliant!

Cheers,

Mike

Yes definitely. I can't stand movies where they put kids in as adults. Although I actually prefer making movies about adults with adults. People my age are not reliable or good at acting.

A Few Production Notes:
I use a Canon XL2 (since Breakaway), a Rode NTG-1, Final Cut Studio 2' and a MacBook Pro.

I used an Optura Xi before that. I got the XL2 about a year ago now. And I'm replacing the Optura with an HV30 next month (I still use it as a second cam for events).

I'm going to chekc out your films tomorrow and give you some feedback. I don't have the movie moaking advice that some of these people will offer. I can give some...But i can give you advice about entertainment value, story vaule and so on...

I just watched Breakaway. Not a bad little story. But it seemed to drag. One thing that is missing is conflict(I get ripped on this all the time) I know the main character had a little bit of inner conflict with not knowing how to tell his dad, but that was really it. The rest of it was basically just going from point A to point B. And when the conflict finally came up the wind noise made it tough to hear(like in some other shots - but i've had that happen too)

I thought the part where the kid just beat the "Legend" was pretty bad. Especially at the end when the main character says he looked up to him his whole life. He wouldn't have laughed and joked at the beggining if he'd respected him so much...well i wouldn't think he would but that's all opinion. Plus the scene was just kinda bad all around, both actors didnt do well, the audio was tough to hear and it just seemed forced....But the things i just mentioned are really the only flaws I see...especially since it's your first movie.

I thought you did a good job of making it look like the past with older racing cars, the mom's car and even the truck he drove...Also the fact you can get so many people to help out blows my mind...so that's deffinately a plus.

Nice job man and keep making movies!!!!

Yeah the actors were not trained or anything. I casted them because they were also the drivers of the race cars. In the future I plan to hold casting sessions (by invitation) to choose the actors.

Also, I have decided to make 2 movies instead of 3 this year, because we are overloaded as it is. But that will help to increase the production quality of both hopefully. I will start production threads for them both in a few weeks when I start working on the scripts.
