I've been trying to dig up reviews and comparisons to the likes of MKH-416 and NTG-3, but haven't found anything but a single review on B&H. The mystery meat that it is, it's hard to drop $1K on something that might be on par with a proven standard.

Neumann microphones are the standard in the recording/broadcast industry every other has to measure up to.

True true. I've never met a Neumann I didn't like. If I didn't already have a 416 and a Sanken CS-1, I'd be all over this.

I understand that it's probably a good mic, but unlike the de-facto standard 416, there's literally nothing out there about this mic.

I have an NTG-3, and I've been thinking about picking up another one. Should I, or would this Neumann be a better choice (at about twice the cost), to which my NTG-3 would be a fine backup/complement?

While not without merit, that comment is also not necessarily correct.

The KMR 81i is a widely used boom mic in professional production, and has been for a long time. It's probably one of the top 3 or 4 high end mics for outdoor use. However, the Sennheiser MKH 416 is historically far more ubiquitous in film and television production.

This is a very good mic, and one of a handful of regular shotgun "standards" to consider for outdoor or studio boom use. Others include the Senn 416, 60, etc. Each has pluses and minuses. There's lots of info about these mics online (look harder ;) ). Many pros don't regularly use short shotguns and try to use their Senn 50, 8050, Neumann 85, Schoeps, what have you, outside and then skip to a longer shotgun like the Neumann KMR 82i, Senn 70, Sanken CS-3e, etc. when needed.

I've owned a Neumann shotgun that was used on a major TV show for episodes that won Emmy's for Best Sound.

I am very interested in the KMR81, I possibly wouldnt use it for dialog unless the post house had one for ADR although it matches closely to the 416, but its absolutely fantastic for foley. Please let me know if you still have it.
