Brackendale Part 2

Re: Brackendale Part 2

That's just sooo beautiful... I have family in Victoria on Vancouver Island. I try to visit at least once a year, but I haven't since I got my DVX. I am certain to bring it along the next time I go.

Why am I not financially independent... :'(? That's where I would live. Your short piece evokes the atmosphere perfectly.

But seriously, I don't do anything special ....[/quote]

Nice post Steven - Thank you!

All flattery and complements aside. You need to get some festival action going. You could create a fantastic dramatic piece. The beginning of part one of this is just great. Just add the drama. You have the skills many strive for and it's time for the big screen.

...not exactly what I was going for.... :o

Re: Brackendale Part 2

great work as always.

how exactly do you get that widescreen aspect ratio? since you're not using the anamorphic im assuming its a tweak in post?

Re: Brackendale Part 2

Carlos, I shoot in letterbox mode and then add an additional mask to create the 2:35:1 ratio (approximate). When I create the Web version, I use Sorenson Squeeze and it allows me to manually define where it will crop so I opt to crop all of the letterbox mask off leaving me with a Cinemascope aspect.

Check the top post in the Technical section for the next step to uprez to an anamorphic master.

Re: Brackendale Part 2

Very very nice!

Just one question though: am I the only one seeing lots of interlaced looking artifacts? Is this due to the compression?

Re: Brackendale Part 2

This should probably belong to other forum (Technical or Vegas), but since you guys touched on the subject:

Could you just define custom preset in Vegas to have a 2.35:1 ratio, and then import footage shot in letterbox with the anamorphic adapter, then crop it to remove the letterbox bars? I'll have to try it...

Re: Brackendale Part 2

Jerry,

That's not going to work if you want to do anything outside of Web files. Your footage will look dreadfully elongated on a 4x3 TV and also to a lesser extent on a widescreen TV.

You have to adhere to NTSC or PAL standards in order for the correct aspect to play on your TV.

It might work for Web work but why would you bother creating something that can't be repurposed?

Re: Brackendale Part 2

im still trying to get into this whole editing thing.

brief: why do you mean by you add a mask?
and
what do you edit on? 16:9? 24p timeline? 4:3?

Re: Brackendale Part 2

Okay....

When you shoot either 4x3 or letterbox in the camera, you edit on a 4x3 timeline.

If you shoot squeeze mode or with the anamorphic adapter, you edit on a 16x9 timeline.

I shoot in letterbox mode which is just a regular 4x3 frame with black bars at the top and bottom.

When I am finished with my editing, I uprez (or enlarge) the frames to a 16x9 size using a tool called Photozoom. I then bring this uprezzed footage into a 16x9 timeline for final output. This whole uprezzing thing is not a standard way to go, it's something I have adopted personally because it allows me to have all the benefits of shooting widescreen without using the adapter.

Refer to the Technical post for more specifics on that process.

I hope I answered your question.

Shaw, I acknowledged this in an earlier post. I compressed it this morning in a sleepy haze (I was working all night on it) so I think I must have defined the bit rate incorrectly to a much lower one than I usually use....I'm going to recompress it later and send it up again.

Yes, it sucks....the first 3 or 4 scenes seem to be suffering the most and they are my favorites....it'll be corrected later tonight....try the file again later.

Re: Brackendale Part 2

oh oh oh, I wasnt aware you had already used photozoom in that render, now its clear, thanks!

Re: Brackendale Part 2

Actually I haven't used Photozoom in this film yet, I just chopped it down to the ratio based on it's smaller 4x3 size....wow, this is getting complicated 8)

Re: Brackendale Part 2

haha, ok, I think Im understanding, I re-read your first post replying to me and now I get it.

When you mask it to 2.35:1 aspect ratio, arent you losing a lot of footage?

Re: Brackendale Part 2

So, if I understand it correctly, you just crop when you save for Web, otherwise your project is in Widescreen DV (16:9)?

I actually just tried in Vegas what I was thinking about, and it worked - but I agree that it would be useless outside of a Web presentation. What about printing to film (directly from the electronig source, of course, without going to tape first)?

Man, the widescreen just looks so cinematic, even on my small laptop screen!

Re: Brackendale Part 2

I just posted a better quality version of the file which doesn't have the blockiness of the other one....

Re: Brackendale Part 2

Thanks Disjecta!

I still seem to have the same problem though :(. Any ideas? Does the native footage show interlacing artifacts?

Re: Brackendale Part 2

Superb once again Disjecta. I'ts cool to see eagles and seagulls on the same turf. This summer I saw eagles catch seagulls mid air and eat them on the beech (that looks too much like another word) beach. I love the glitter off the frosty leaves. Did you get any sleep at all while you were up here? :)

Re: Brackendale Part 2

Shaw, I took a look at it and am not experiencing any problems...anyone else?

No interlace artifacts in the original
