FS7: Bought a GH5S to go with the FS7

We've gone for a GH5S - we needed a 10 bit Log 4K B Cam for the FS7 plus something that can be discretely taken abroad for quick shoots. We gave up waiting for Sony to release an A7xx with 10 bit video.

Anyone else done the same thing? Any tips?

I've gone for a Leica/Pan 15mm/1.7 for gimbal work plus a selection of older Konica AR lenses for static B Cam stuff.

TIA,

Ben.

Neither the Fujifilm X-T3 or Nikon Z6 or BMPCC4K tempted you away from the GH5S?

I considered them, but none of them actually exist yet

BMPCC has the specs on paper I want, but I’ve yet to see a BM product that doesn’t suffer huge gotchas.

Fuji seems to be 10 bit - but 8:2:0

Nikon won’t record decent internal codec.

GH5S exists, was £1600 after “cashback” and looks on paper to be a perfect B cam.

So far, the only thing that has caught me out is the lack of 4096 400 Meg 4K at 25P. Seems to be an oversight, as it will do 24 and 30. But I can shoot 25P UHD happily at 400 Meg 10 bit 422.

As sony has announcements on Sep 14th, 18th and 25th I would have waited a couple of weeks...

Yep, I thought about that - but conversations with my supplier, CVP, suggest that nothing will appear until Q1 next year at the very earliest.

And then one has to work through all the wrinkles and gotchas, firmware updates etc etc.

I needed something for Oct 2nd, so needs must etc. Very impressed so far, though.

Vapourware is great - until you actually need it right now:happy:

I did my first test yesterday with the GH5S in V Log L and it matched very easily to the FS7 SLog3. Simple piece to camera with dubiously composed B cam quarter angle.

My main observation so far is that the GH5S picture, despite being dialled down to the lowest (-5) sharpness and NR settings, was considerably more detailed than the FS7. I used a 1980s Konica 40mm 1.8 on the GH5S, so it wasn’t due to native Panny lens sharpening that I’ve read about.

The FS7 had a 55mm 1.8 Zeiss, so certainly not a soft lens.

I ended up just punching in and out of the 4K FS7 image on an HD timeline.

Will try and post a comparison of the 2 angles tomorrow for analysis, if Im feeling brave enough. :undecided

Overall, my impression is of a very impressive small 10 bit cam that is only 6 months old, but has been totally overlooked in the fantasy race towards acquiring a BM Pocket 4K.

Not sure what you mean by "tested in anger", But yes I was wondering about GH5 on a gimbal and Pros and cons between that and A7iii. Most people I know are using A7Sii or now the A7iii for that purpose and that seems to be where the demand is from producers also.

I’ve been using an A7Rii up until now, but it’s 8 bit and won’t pass broadcast audit.

Tested in anger - Brit for “used properly“

I know this is the FS7 forum, but I was wondering how you found the low light performance on the GH5s? Could you push ISO? Much noise?

I do own the original GH5 (not s), and noise is unacceptable for me with ISO>3,200K. Up to 1,600K it's quite clean when exposed properly (and the exposure rules for V-log are quite different than for Sony's S-log2/3).

Not yet tested - but worth noting it’s an entirely different camera/sensor to the regular GH5. All the reviews out there suggest it’s excellent in low light and that’s one of Panasonic’s main marketing messages. My principle driving need was for a compact 10 bit 4K.

yes me.
I purchased a GH5 last year because I was sick with the a6300 rolling shutter. I was totally impressed about the color science that in the end I sold the FS7 and went for the EVA1. I added a GH5s for low light (excellent!) and I am pretty happy with the Panasonic stuff. EVA1 has some downsides but nothing beats the colors.
For the GH5 I purchased the kit lens for run and gun. I have a DJI 15mm 1.7 from the Inspire and mostly use my arsenal of FD lenses (20, 28, 35, 50, 85) with and without speedbooster.

by the way V-Log and CineEI is a pretty good match but with the GH5 I mostly shoot cinelike D -2, -5, -2, -2, 0
