Boompole

Hello.

I watched the various options available boompoles. I like the Gitzo, they are very light.

Does anyone have experience with them? What do you recommend? Would be for use in film.

Thank you very much

I use a gitzo alum. pole. It's a bit heavy as compared to the fiber poles but it works. Boom poles vary in weight, length, and construction. I have worked with fiber poles and their light weight are a big plus but they also carry a high price. The other option to consider is internal or external wiring. I prefer external, which although not quite as convenient, I find I can manage cable noise easier with a externally wired pole.

I used to have a Gitzo aluminum. It was a 7' version, very skinny, and it worked well. It didn't have room inside for coiled cable, so external was the only option. The one thing I disliked most was the washer on the top. It was too wide, so it blocked the XLR connector on the shockmount. I sold it last year (purchased in 1997) after I got an entire new mic package, and now I have a K-tek with internal cable. Haven't had many issues with cable noise, and it's actually nicer not to be dealing with all the cable slack.

abcjean,

What kind of length are you looking for? Do you want aluminum, carbon fiber, or graphite? How do you want your pole cabled? Your budget is also going to determine what kind of pole you can get.

Thanks.

Searched for something in between, with 2.50 meters long, more carbon fiber. I think the best external wiring, because a single cable and go from micro to the recorder. The budget is $ 400 or so.

I'd go with Gitzo at a $400 budget. I have a Ktek and a Gitzo, and the Ktek is much better than the Gitzo IMO. But with that comes a much higher price.

I have a Gitzo 10' carbon fiber pole.

The construction is not as study as I'd want it to be, especially at full extension with a zeppelin on it, but it gets the job done at <$200

Does your CF Gitzo flex with a blimp at full extension or are you just using a bare mic/shockmount?

Check out loonaudio.com

They have two levels of carbon poles...penta is the cheaper and loonboom are the pricier. Also their coiled cable has a special surface process that helps it make less noise. I have their 16ft loonboom and it's awesome.

I own a K-Tek K152CCR 12.5 ft graphite pole, internal cable.

I love this boom. It's light, durable and quiet. K-Tek has incredible customer service, too. A while back I had the internal cable replaced after years of hard use and the price was really reasonable.

The 152CCR is worth every nickel. I just wrapped a short film that required me to boom multiple takes of a 9-10 minute scene. Anything heavier than my K-Tek, and they would have had to call an ambulance for me !

At K-Tek (full disclosure, see my signature), we have two types of graphite poles, the Klassic and the Avalon. The Klassic poles are the ones that Manfred (the founder of K-Tek) originally came out with. The K152CCR mentioned above is a classic pole. The Klassic poles are modular, meaning you can get an uncabled pole, and then easily cable it later on if you like.

The Avalon poles are a lower cost solution graphite pole (they are also available in aluminum). They use the same graphite as the Klassic poles, but don't have the modularity, thus the lower price.
