Boompole

I recently purchased a new model carbon fibre internally cabled VDB small boom , 500mm closed length so it fits into pelican 1610 & 1510. Used it on 3 day doco last week and worked beautiful, so time will tell. My other is Panamic carbon fibre Super Maxi which I love.

the best bang for the buck is the 12' gitzo, apparently, but can anyone reccommend a good boom for around 100 dollars? Or am I better off using my crappy painter's pole till I can buy that 12' gitzo?

With price not being a major concern, what would be the best/lightest boom pole for using outside, often on multi-day backpacking trips for some narration work (I have a 416 mic). Also, what would be the ideal length? This is all new to me. I will use the 416 on camera for my solo stuff (might look funny booming myself, ha!), but when I have a couple guys with me I'm assuming it would be better to boom.

Just as an FYI for those married to the idea of internal cabling. I was watching the BTS for American Gangster and the boom op was not using internal cabling. He had it coiled around the pole....which he probably bought somewhere other than Home Depot

A lot of people don't use internal cabled boom poles. I think cabled boompoles are more popular in the USA than in Europe. Internal cable can get all twisted and tangled inside the boom pole and it's a pain in your rear if you don't know how to fix them. Sometimes is so bad that is better to replace the cable.
That happens to me working in Nigeria and I didn't have spare coiled XLR, so I came back home with a K-tek that there was not way to close it all the way down and it was 6 foot long. Security in the airport loved it.
I still like cabled boompole for documentary work better, but now I always travel with extra coiled Xlr in case I need to replace the cable on the location.

you can write billy sorokin and ask him where did he buy it .
in 90% of the time no one use coiled cable on fiction as it usially slaps heavily on fast boom mooves .very hard slide the boom if you need it without noise during the shot ,
good for doco mostly .

Gosh, Oleg... learn to write properly and spell your words correctly! If you want anyone to take you seriously, then you need to act like a professional.

I haven't been long here, but it sure seems like most take him very serious right now.. Most seem rather happy to have him answer their question however he writes it.

What a narrow minded and stupid post. I don't think here is one person that doesn't take Oleg's post very seriously. If you read carefully you will find out that many people are spending serious cash buying gear that Oleg has recommended and so far seems people are very happy with his suggestion.
You shouldn't be so worry about spelling and you should try to share your knowledge with other people using a language that is not your native one. Assuming that you have any knowledge to share on any language.

dont worry Dave - you will eventually teach your lonely IQ to read my posts and if not , its your lost :-)

I, for one, would like to thank Oleg for all of his posts here. I have found his insight very helpful in making purchase decisions. We all have to remember that this is a web site that brings in members not only from English speaking countries, but also from some of the other 160+ other countries in the world!

I can't believe that you think like that. WOW! How rude.

We all know that Oleg is a little rough around the edges, but it is more personality than language barrier! lol

NO ONE would say he isn't professional.

You're right, I was a little out of line guys, Sorry Oleg. I hadn't realized at first that there was a language barrier there... I just tend to get a little t/o at poor grammar and spelling--my newspaper editor dad's influence on me I guess.

Thanks for your input here Oleg, no hard feelings, I hope.

Too bad you dad editor didn't teach you how to read. Oleg's signature say he is in Israel. How did you miss there was language barrier?

I routinely search Oleg specifically to read everything he’s posted
I’ve learned a ton. I applaud his grasp on the English language first off, second even the hardest to decipher is decipherable and a fantastic hold nothing back post. If you have trouble understanding his posts May I suggest you attempt to learn his language? As then you can converse any misunderstandings as freely with him as he does with us.
