Boompole Bags/Cases? What do you use?

I bought the K-Tek KE-89CC boompole which is about 29" folded (and about 1.5" diameter). I was looking at boompole bags/cases, and saw the K-Tek boompole case for $175, but that's a bit spendy for me considering the boompole itself was also $175, plus the case is backordered at B&H. I looked at some of the alternatives, but wondered what you use. Is a hard case better or a soft bag? I actually thought another bag/case/tube could be repurposed, f.ex. this for about $30 plus shipping (you can get it in charcoal color not just the hideous olive green):

Cabela's Fly Rod and Reel Case

I was thinking of getting the 30" version (it comes in 30", 34", 37", 50" and bigger sizes for about the same $30 price). I was thinking the reel case can be used for xlr cables and little stuff. Inside is a nylon-lined PVC tube, and outside is the denier shell.

Of course, there are probably other better options - what do you use?

Mine ends up shorter so I stick it inside luggage when I travel and I have a foam cap I put over the threaded end and don't use a case when I'm not traveling. I have seen folks use PVC pipe with caps as a case. The fish pole case looks like a good option though.

I already have bags for all my stuff, but I could see the reel section being useful if you have a long cord permanently attached to your pole.

Using fishing rod cases often are better at airports if you travel at all with gear, many airlines allow you to carry 'sporting gear' at no additional charge.
Just a word of warning if do go to airports with the pole 'DO NOT call it a BoomPole'........ Fishpole, Microphone pole, are ok but the word 'Boom' gets security a bit twitchy.

ROTFL! Oh, that's just too funny! Good thinking! Also, it is true that sometimes boompoles are called microphone fishpoles, so the bag is not even much of a deception :)

From my 2011 post on the JW group: http://jwsoundgroup.net/index.php?/topic/8603-boom-pole-case/ (pictures also)
This case has been on on number of fights and has seen other types of abuse. No problems so far.

I just purchased this Cavision Boompole bag and it seems perfect (http://www.adorama.com/CISC904S.html). As it is backordered, I have not received it to test the quality of the product. It's only $25 plus shipping (I have not seen it for sale anywhere else aside from Adorama and the manufacter's website [where shipping is $80. Yikes!]. )

I've seen the Cavision Boompole bags at B&H when I was researching them, f.ex.: Cavision's Boom Pole Carrying Case (130mm) - there's also a bunch of other ones. I ended up buying the one I linked to above, and it should get in here tomorrow, so I'll give feedback then. What I liked about it as opposed to just a tube, is that you can open it from the side and it also has a pouch for the cable and a second one for smaller stuff you may need for your boom. It is a bit more $ though, with shipping it was a bit over $40.

Right, aesthetics are subjective (btw. that bag I linked to comes in charcoal, which is what I bought) - for example, I'm not really much into the DIY look of the one you linked to. I have nothing against DIY, but in this case, seems to me, once you price everything out, you don't come out ahead, and if you do, just barely, but the look is a bit ghetto. YMMV, of course. In any case, I'll report on the bag after I test it out. But that backpack you linked to seems very cool - I especially like that it has quite a bit of protective padding. Let us know how the Cavision one works for you once you receive it.

I would build it a bit differently to make it more aesthetically pleasing, of course. The Cavision bag isn't padded much (if at all), and so the DIY one would be better due to it being a hard case. If it doesn't work out, I'll look at the charcoal fishing bag you linked to on this thread! It isn't a hard-case, but the padding should be more than adequate.

What do you mean? Of course it has a tube inside - the long part is a pvc tube that's lined inside to make it soft for the fishing rod / boompole, but it's a regular pvc tube that's hard. Scroll down to the specs and you'll see.

OK, so I received the Rowan 30" Fly Rod And Reel Case With Extra Reel Pocket CHARCOAL, and just tested it out. The boompole I bought it for, is the K-Tek KE-89CC - and it fits to *perfection* as if made to measure for it. In fact it fits so well, I'm not sure other boompoles would fit it - there is like literally 1/4" left to spare. The other thing is that the pvc tube that this case is built around has a divider running down the middle along the entire length, so if you have an external cable running along the length of the boompole, you would need to remove that divider (cut it out) to accommodate the cable. It's a snug fit. The pockets are a great feature, you can store stuff in there, like cables, connectors and the like. All in all, excellent fit for the boompole I have, but maybe you need to look at other fly cases to accommodate other boompoles. FYI, the 30" length specified is the *external* length of the bag, not the internal length of the PVC tube, so when you look for fly rod cases, keep that in mind, because the internal length is going to be shorter.

I might have to do that. I called Adorama after realizing the product was backordered (like usual, they make you find it out yourself). It'll take 3 - 4 weeks until it arrives. I may cancel the order if I find something better. The extra bag part on the fly-rod case would be obtrusive for me unless I change my setup, as all the gear is stored in a different bag. I may have to change some things up though. Depends on my patience level. I'll keep the internal vs. external length size in mind!

Remember, there's a whole bunch of these fishing rod and reel cases of various lengths and thicknesses - and if you google for *just* "fishing rod case" (without the "reel" part) you'll find a whole bunch that are just plain without the side pockets. Bottom line, there is a huge variety. Personally, I find the pockets convenient, but you should find a case that suits your needs specifically, since all of us have different use scenarios.

I use a large document case (for blueprints and stuff) I found at an office supply store. It's plastic, adjustable in length, and has a shoulder strap. I probably wouldn't fly with it, but it's fine for around town. I could defiantly get a second pole in there and maybe a third.

I received the Cavision boompole bag a couple weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised to find it was actually a hard case. It's been holding up terrifically and fits the boompole incredibly well. It's very snug on the sides, so doesn't wiggle. It's kind of funny: a friend of mine liked the case so much that he wanted to buy a boompole just so he could buy one of the Cavision bags!

I took a few pictures to show what the case looks like in detail (the product photo is terrible):

Very nice! Looks like good quality and workmanship, fit and finish. Certainly a good choice. I do appreciate the pockets on mine though, because you can fit various bits and bobs, cables, mic holders, pistol grips and whatnot. But yours looks more professional colorwise, like it's dedicated to the task, while mine looks like what it is - adapted from a fishing rod case :) Good choice either way. How long is that Cavision?
