Boom with internal cable - a joke?

I've been using a K-Tek with internal coiled cable and I was wondering if maybe the coiled cable is some sort of kid's stuff as it jingles when handled not so carefully. Or in other words is it common to handle a boom as a steadicam as this has been the only way I could get decent sound anyway.

What's the opinion on those internally cabled booms?

Thanks,
T

Which you would be doing if you're booming a shot. :)

A lot of internal cables on the west coast. Some on the east coast. I'm not a fan, but some folks really like them because they don't have to worry about the cable.

Well, you do have to worry when you get a kink in the cable, like when you get a kink in the coil cord in your telephone coil cord or headphones. Cables are replacable.

And don't leave the boom extended or the stretched coil doesn't like to compress back down and let you close the boom all the way.

Run and gun stuff (while running) may make noise, but if you're running, you're making noise anyway.

It's good to hear that it's OK.
Ty, by the way can you tell me if it's alright to mount the NTG3 inside a shockmount so that the front bracket clamps around the interference tube (slots).

Thanks,
T

Hey T,

I use a 416 in a Rycote windbreaker. The suspension does hold the end ot the 416 in small rubber bands.

I don't think there's much of a problem, but the less obstruction the better. You could probably orient teh mic in such a way as to make the bands grab the non-slotted area along the sides of the body.

Good point!
