I am writing with a problem that I hope you guys can help me with...

I may need to do a group interview with anywhere from 8-12 people seated in chairs ( imagine 3 rows with 4 seats = 12)...

My thought is to use my Rode NTG shotgun mic but I don't have a boom pole or stand and have never used a boom for this type of inteview..

HELP??

Any thoughts with specifics what to buy, where and cheap is good

Thank you guys!

The NTG-2 is a shotgun that will only pick up well what is directly in front of it. You'll probably want to get an omni mic to hang over and in front of them if no one will be swinging the boom from speaker to speaker. Or you may want to consider a handheld that the interviewees can pass back and forth.

Or more like 6 omni mics. 2 above each row spaced between the people ((Person - Mic - Person - Mic - Person)). You could probably rent some from a music store. Sm57 is an instrument mic used on the presidential podium. One mic ain't gonna cut it.

Echoing the others, there's no way a single stationary shotgun can cover a group that large. No matter where you point it, at most ONE of the people in the group will be on mic, the others will be on the fringes or outside the mic's pickup pattern, picked up at a lower level if at all and sounding noticably off-mic. Very likely it would only be the people in the front row that there'a a chance of their being close enough to the mic. The nominal working distance of a shotgun is about 22 inches - the second row will be AT LEAST double that and the third row 4 or more times that if the mic is in front of the group.
