Bonds on Bonds

you can't just say it's the hardest thing to do in sports and that's that...

people land a 900 on a skateboard far less than 3:10 times, - does that make that the hardest?

there are only a handful of people in the world that can climb 5.14c rock - does that make it the hardest?

what about running 100 yard dash in under 9 seconds, or a slew of other athletic accomplishments?

i guess i'm just naive cause i suck at baseball tho

Oregondank,

I don't care for baseball either. I'm a football fan through and through. But, I don't chime into a thread about baseball that is a great discussion by fans of the sport and rip it apart and trash it and make the thread into an argument. If you don't like baseball fine.... But don't disrespect the sport and the people that enjoy it.

Okay, that's all.:)

this thread was about Bonds...i have no respect for anyone who has to cheat to win, and i have no respect for a person (any person) to get paid 100million dollars for playing baseball...that's just me...

and for the record i didn't post to "disrespect the people who enjoy (baseball)" - just to state my opinion

Dude, bro.

A couple of topics that need to be addressed:

1. Bond's - Did he cheat? Who knows, but in this country we are innocent until PROVEN guilty in a court of law. Not a court of public opinion. I have my suspicions, but he has not been convicted of anything yet. I don't care if you're talking about a baseball player and performance enhancing drugs or if you're talking about the cops pulling a planted bag of coke out of your back pocket, you are innocent until proven guilty.

2. There is a difference between you hitting a 16 year olds curve ball, my experience playing college and pro ball, and anyone playing in the big leagues. What's that difference? Maturity, strength, velocity, and skill. My first year in college I hit .298. My second year I hit .329 with 27 home runs. I never got a hit except in batting practice or my two games in minor league baseball. We're talking A ball. This is the $16 a game, open ended contract, no signing bonus baseball. We're talking players playing for $4000 a year. Why did I do it? I loved the game and the dream to someday put on a big league uniform. Why did I have my knee reconstructed six times? To continue to chase that dream. If you want to talk about athletic ability, I was a great athlete, I worked out, never used drugs and played the game because I loved it.

3. Physical? Dude, I was a catcher. I have broken all my fingers at least once (half them crack every time I bend them), my right thumb twice, dislocated shoulders, and had more spikes and muscular guys slam into me than I can count. What do you mean it's not physical?

4. Baseball tells the tale of America. True, salaries are high, but the leagues are making money and MLB is reporting all time record profits. Baseball is a business. Yell at Google, Microsoft, GM, the oil companies. At least baseball compensates their employees who help them make money. Disliking someone because they make money is like saying you don't like James Cameron because Titanic made so much money.

5. What about all the things baseball did for this country? Post 9/11 the Yankees run into the post season united the city, gave New Yorkers something to believe in together. Baseball was bigger than the sport, players, and teams on the field. It was hope and rebirth. If you can't understand what that team meant to me as a kid who grew up in NY and lost people I knew on 9/11 then nothing will ever make it clear.

6. Most importantly, you talk about people who cheat and that is why you're down on the sport... Only Hudson can properly respond to that comment.

i guess i misspoke - i think i meant to say not a "full contact" sport, not non-contact as i said...

i know that all professional level athletes are dedicated, i just don't think baseball is above anything else and with the way they get paid, steroids, players on strike, etc. its just become sour for me...

as for innocent until proven guilty, i'm not so sure...there are plenty of "proven innocence" that i see as guilty...Michael Jackson...Rodney King Cops...maybe even O.J. Simposon...

i think the evidence for Bonds is pretty much out there isn't it??

i have broken my wrist twice, my ankle once, torn my rotator cuff, broke my tailbone, pulled my MCL, and had about 6-7 concussions from snowboarding and skateboarding over the years - and i never got close to getting paid for any of it, so i know some of what you feel - thank god i haven't had an ACL tho (knocks on wood) - alot of my friends have...

let me throw my hat into the ring. i think the point being made is, all else being equal, hitting a baseball from someone relative to your ability isn't the hardest thing in sports. of course hitting a clemens 95 mph is ridiculously hard. but i don't think it's any harder than returning a 150 mph roddick serve down the middle. or hitting a hole in one. let's not use the most extreme example as the norm.

Heh heh

Estes hit Bonds pn his second pitch just now; the crowd clapped.

-

Returning Roddick's serve with a raquet that has 100 SQ IN head you mean ?

-

Hitting a hole is one isnt even in the same category (sides Gold isn't a sport anyway)

Muahahahahha!

Hudson, come on. You of all people should be giving the tennis respect. Batters have the luxury of knowing the ball has to be in a nice little comfy one foot by one foot box. Sure a tennis player has a big racket, but they don't even know what side the ball's going to!! Put two catchers, one on each side, and have the batter stand in the middle, pitcher can pitch to either catcher, AND the ball gets to hit the ground before popping up, than I might have some respect for them.

Btw, I love baseball. However, I think Mickey Mantle once said, "Let's face it, without beer, baseball would be nothing." There's some element of truth to that.

You know I respect tennis; but hitting a baseball is harder.

I've done both (At my respective levels of course)
