Bolex D16: RAW, 16/Super 16 sensor size, costs less than MkIII

I"m not sure about that. It may be perfect for the hipster crowd that doesn't read film forums or worry about the latest tech but wants something to use creatively that produces a good image.

Those same hipsters who, by and large, seem to be running '08-'09 era MacBook Pros to process their 24-per-second CinemaDNG files with? Oh yeah, they'll love it, especially after they snag one on eBay for $500-$800.

The D16 will be more like the Ikonoskop. A rare camera that owner's will keep and love for years because it does exactly what they want it to do in a simple straightforward manner without unneccessary consumer frills. This is a digital cinema camera for 16mm film shooters , not videographers. CinemaDNG is not a problem, it is a powerful tool for visual artists.

Looks great....unfortunately if this was $500 I would have to paint over the logos as having a camera in Ireland with the name Bolex.....is an absolute no no.

That term has a whole different meaning here.

Seriously, the name Bolex carries a lot of weight with anyone who knows film; even in Ireland ;)

Its pronounced Bow-Lex (as in Rolex), not Bollocks.

However, this Digital Bolex might make the name Bollocks more appropriate if they continue with all the delays....

Digital Bollocks? Not bad!

I can hear it now - "Would ya go wan outta dat ya bolex!"

There are people who cannot spell.....I can hear it now - "Would ya look at dat bollocks with the bolex!".

It just wouldn't do.

Some backers on the DBolex forum are getting a bit anxious with the latest news....I have yet to see an anxious tone there until now. DBolex better stop having fun "making the scene" and get their act together, lol.

Not really willing to read 106 pages to know this. Is the D16 bug-free and ready to be used, widely available and all?

Short answer is no. They were trying to get the final camera ready for NAB, but they weren't happy with what it was doing image/sensor wise (some technical issue). Also, the first run of cameras for backers (who have already paid) are going to be delivered before they start a second round of orders, or at least begin to be delivered before they take more orders.

Basically where they are is: A final body with working electronics/menu system/interface....but no footage as of yet because of the technical problem.

Not even close. There's been zero footage from an actual DB, nor is there a currently working model that you can actually shoot with.

It seems efforts are being focused on new lens line, turret, etc.. so likely everything can be released at once. It'll be here soon... patience.

Personally I think this all goes back to too many different products at once for a small outfit. People said the lenses weren't affecting the final body since a different maker was charged with producing them....but the fact is, ANYTHING the company undertakes uses resources...whether it's time, dollars, or otherwise. If a lens branded as DBolex has a problem working with the camera, it's DBolexes problem, if the software they are working on has issues with the camera, it's DBolexes problem.
They really should have focused on the camera and decided on one very good mount, and then later branched out if they wanted to. Right now, they are trying to make a camera, lenses, several mounts, adapters, software....it's too much.

And here is the ultimate problem. This was a kickstarter project. LOT's of people contributed and for thousands of $'s. The hipsters have to deliver something to those that funded because that money is well spent on the development of the camera, that isn't developed yet! Now there is a pocket cam from BMD that cost less and might out perform the hipster cam. They can't just hand back the money unless they get bought out and return the kickstarted investment. So the morale to the story is, if you kickstart something you BEST be prepared to execute. And if you fund a kickstart, you BEST be prepared to be let down.....

D16= DOA.

They have finished working production cameras and are currently calibrating the sensor and processing chain. Joe wasn't happy enough with the IQ they are getting so far to show anything at NAB. They have all the resources they need to finish the job.

I see the pocket cam eating into the GH3, Sony NEX, and low end DSLR market more than the D16 market. In fact the pocket cam will feed the market for D16's and Ikonoskops as the next step up for the format. You will not see either camera showing up in mass retailers.

As great as the Pocketcam looks on paper (same as the D16 at this point) I don't see 1080p/Rolling Shutter/Cmos out performing 2k RAW/Global Shutter/CCD unless I know absolutely nothing about cameras.

And as for the usual negativity on here, DOA ? the D16 hasn't arrived yet, until that date this judgement can't be made.

Not really negativity...just a healthy dose of skepticism. People often might be skeptical when a company has funded itself on others faith and has not yet shown one frame of footage. I think many of us want them to succeed, but with each passing day and the continuation of branching to other "projects"....yeah, that is a cause for questions.
I think the famous "wait for Scarlet 3k for 3k" going on for 2 years or more is one big reason why. DBolex has a good idea, a good sensor, and a good price....
Just my opinion, they should have left it there instead of all the other distractions from the camera itself.
