Bolex D16: RAW, 16/Super 16 sensor size, costs less than MkIII

I don't think you can actually say that. Official word at this point (that I've seen) is that it's SD cards.

The the most recent specs posted on the DBolex site, which include the HDMI port update, still say CF. Since Elle is one of the camera's designers she would know. There was some discussion of SD as an alternate possibility, but the final decision may have already been made.

Then what about the Kickstarter page I originally linked, which is also duplicated on the main site? Has anything else been explicitly posted on the forums and/or Twitter that says, "Hey, guys, we know we said SD cards, but now we've changed our minds again and sticking with CF."?

Project Update #18: Small Camera Update
Posted by Joe Rubinstein
Hey Kickstarter,

I am waiting on two pieces of information to create a bigger camera update with some really cool stuff, but it is going to take another week or so, so I thought I would do a little camera update in the mean time.

1st as some of you have seen in other places we are sticking with CF cards, we were thinking about changing to SD cards because of the price and some interesting projections for the future of SD, but in testing it turned out that the SD cards were significantly slower, even when advertised as the same speed.

2nd we are hiring a new Project / Production Manager on the electronics design team to really spear head the work flow of this project, work on schedules, and help us ramp up to higher production numbers soon. We have already hired 3 additional software engineers and 2 additional hardware guys who are all working on this camera full time. That makes it 9 people full time and 10 people part time, so we have a team of 19 people working on this camera right now!

3rd, the software designed by Pomfort is going well! They have created the basic transcoding function, next step is to integrate it with the rest of the software, and create the best workflow we can think of.

This is some of the things we will be talking about in the bigger camera update; body design, a set of Bolex S16mm C-mount lenses, new crank feature, new website functionality, and of course delivery date.

I know we are so close, and everyone is excited to get their hands on one or at least read news from people that have gotten their hands on one, but please be patient, I assure you we are working as fast as we can :)

Thank you all for your support, Joe

Well it's nice that Joe figured out that SD cards are ****. When is the rest of the motion picture world going to realize it?

It's like Panasonic said, "Hey, you know what'll make the GH2 seem less flimsy? If we use paper-thin, mostly-hollow memory cards that make it look like an armored car in comparison!"

I love SD cards, and very much prefer them to CF. You can get a rugged one if you wish. there are even some filled with epoxy. Of course, SSD drives are a lot better, and in any case the amount of data from a RAW video camera is going to be a problem with memory cards, be them SD or CF.

I don't get how SD cards can make something seem flimsy. They're in the camera, and once you take them out you're careful - like with all media. How about film? Or cassettes? Those are/were a headache to work with in comparison to SD cards.

I think it's odd how the footage has captivated anybody? The specs on paper sound friggin fantastic and if that was the only way to judge a camera, I think I'd buy it day one. But if initial D16 footage in the previews given, is even a slight indicator of what it will end up like... it simply lacks the film-like, cinematic quality I think they're aiming for. On most cameras this is hardly an important feature... but it really seems like they're tackling it head on and want to produce a Bolex equivalent for digital filmmakers. They want to approximate if not in some way the genuine feel of 16mm. Aside from the fact that RAW is going to provide a massive advantage in many many ways... the aesthetic of the footage is not all that impressive. I think the GH2 along with other DSLRs and cameras for the same price or less produce far more "film-like" results.

Maybe I'm reading the situation wrong and people simply want a video camera that shoots raw and will gladly take their S16 lenses. Discounting the fact that the footage simply doesn't look cinematic... then this could be a great camera.

I've never liked any of the sample footage that's been posted. But I'll reserve my final comment until folks like Frank can give it a go and see what they can milk out of it.
