Bolex D16: RAW, 16/Super 16 sensor size, costs less than MkIII

Based on the 5.5u pixel pitch, active image size at 2048x1152 would be 11.26mm x 6.33 mm with an image circle of 12.92mm. M4/3 is 22mm image circle, APS-C is about 28-30mm image circle depending on which sensor. At 1920x1080 it would be 10.56mm x 5.94, image circle of 12.11mm. Both are a bit larger than 2/3" or ETC movie mode on a GH2 which are about 9.6mm x 5.4mm.

Looking forward to the possibilities of this camera. Biggest advantage of raw IMO is being able to push critical decisions about things like ISO, white balance, sharpening, noise reduction, gamma curves, etc. to post where you have more flexibility, better tools, and better monitoring than shooting video formats in the field. With Lightroom 4 supporting motion images, it will even be possible to profile lenses to correct distortion, CA, and vignetting to some degree. Looks like lots of fun to me.

I will point out yet again that no 1080p video output format camera fully resolves 1080p. The very best optically resolve around 800-900 lines vertical and about 1.6k horizontal, including the Alexa. Haven't seen a DSLR yet that will pass 600 lines vertical without aliasing and moire issues. Starting at 2k, this camera should come close to 800 lines performance. It is essentially the same raw resolution as the SI-2k, maybe even the same sensor.

What's it going to take to get Bloom-style just the tip of the nose in focus DOF with this thing?

;)

So...EX1 sized sensor plus RAW...could be a good green screen camera for the money, no? 2K also gives you some nice elbow room for warp stabilizer.

Wish the iso wasn't quite so low though.

Sad part is, it looks like they're using a similar sensor from Kodak (maybe the same one?).
So if you want some potential tests, DL the Ikonoshop footage to get an idea of what this sensor from Bolex may look like. Seems really good to me; high resolution, no sharpening needed.

I think the sensor on the dII is slightly smaller (10,6 mm x 6 mm v. 12.85 mm x 9.64 mm) and will do a max. framerate of 30fps. The footage from the A-Cam looks great to me too.. Seems like the Digi Bolex guys went and made one better and cheaper. Also they seem to get marketing..

and they just passed the 100k :) hope they get overfunded twice or three times. they'll need the money as the 100k is very low
