Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

yeah.. I have emailed them many times already and they where supposed to ship me all the adapter 3 weeks ago. Granted Bogen is very good at responding the the emails but the last word I got is that they could officially figure no way to fix the problem except mount it without a uv filter and upside down so you can still use the trays. Im willing to bet though that the 93 will work, if I ever get it :P

No vignetting.
the monitor was in underscan mode, right?
yes.. the top lip has a little flap that comes down to seal light out from the top, but the bottom is still open. It would be nice to see the same flap on the bottom. Technically speaking though, its very rare to get a damaging hit of light off the bottom, unless your shooting something wierd like snow or water. Of course if your using the formatt filters, the built in edge helps considerably, although there is still alot of space.

Thats what camera tape is for I guess :)
I guess I'm spoiled by the Chrosziel which doesn't suffer from this...
But you need an adapter ring, and the 72mm doesnt work so im working with bogen to figure out which one will work, most likely the 82mm one with a 72mm-82mm adapter ring. We can sell them right now, but I dont wanna start selling something that doesnt work right.
I don't blame you, a step up/down rings are notoriously thin and I'm not sure I'd trust it. Have you tried the Chrosiel adapter ring? It is also a 85mm clamp and the one-piece ring down to 72mm even clears my short shotgun on the 100A. Just a thought...
yes.. we will have formatt filters available... that are quassey-required for this mattebox because of the banded edges.

Just give me a few days to get the store setup, if you dont wanna wait, you can PM me and we can arrange it. It will all be shipped directly from New Jersey.
Jared,

If you're going to all this trouble, how about getting set up to sell standard 4x4 filters at a discount. There is a lot bigger demand for those, and we could all use a price break. I personally will shy away from the non-standard Formatt filters...

A yep... the more I read here, the more I'm appreciating mine. Maybe you ought to just negotiate a better price on these. They mount easily, have filter frames, use standard filters, and do not leak light. There are also accessories available...
It will be for sale the day I "approve" it.. I dont wanna stick you guys with monkey boxes.

And there is vignetting using a 72mm spacer to a 72mm adapter ring, that was the first thing I tested.  As far as your UV.. you might get away with the UV > 72-82mm adapter ring > mattebox.. I can check that out as well.
Jared, I admire you for sticking to your guns... don't rush it, you have a good reputation and don't need any hassles. If someone is in a hurry, have them pay a few hundred more for the Chrosziel... they will never regret it.
Jarred I am saving up for one of these boxes as I love the specs, waiting for your final thumbs up in the process (I know it is only  a formality that is pending) but buying stuff from the UK is advantagous to me as we are in the EU. I would never the less love to stick with DVXuser shop, hwta should I do, could I order it through formatt UK and pass the credit onto you guys as having made the sale?
If I was in Europe, I'd get a Chrosziel. They cost a lot less over there than over here. With this Formatt, you'll have duty to consider... I bet it ends up being the same price...

Jarred, had another possible source besides the Chrosziel adapter ring. The folks that makes the ProPrompter (Bodelin) also make an adapter ring that goes from the clamp (85mm?) down to 72mm. It's tapered nicely and I use it to mount their small teleprompter to the DVX100a. It might work with your Bogen mattebox perhaps. Worth a try?

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

mitch,

i thought the chrosziel vignetted a little bit in underscan?...i remember someone mentioning that...perhaps kai? how much do chrosziels sell for and what's the difference between their sunshades and matteboxes? also, i see them priced from $799-$1600+...muchos gracias senor...

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

wow dude... you should compress all those posts to a single one, you got like 10 in a row :o

Mitch could you pls point me in the right direction! Also one thing I never understood about the chroziel setup is if one mattebox will do the trick with both setups i.e. with and without the anamorphic adapter. & BTW buying Formatt in the EU should not incur any duty.

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

Hey guys,

Had a shoot this weekend so I've been out of the loop for a while. It's great to see so many people trying to make the Formatt box work! It is well constructed and would definitely be a great tool to use with the DVX.

I also did some additional research last week and there are a couple of options left to explore.

Got an e-mail from Formatt U.K. and they said they could send me an 85mm clamp-on adapter and I'm gonna try it out with the Cavision AR85-72. Also, Pentax makes an conical 72mm-86mm adapter ring that should open wide enough to allow use of the 86mm screw-in adapter without vignetting, but we won't know until we try.

Hope this helps.

I figured since they make Chrosziel in Europe it might be a better deal... maybe not? I use a less expensive model which I think they call a Shade, but has two filter holders, one rotatable. It was around $699US. The one that works on the anamorphic can also be used on the regular lens, as they explained it to me... it is quite a bit more money though...

I haven't seen that, and I looked for it? Has anyone else seen that?

The difference between their Shade and Matteboxes is a little hazy to me... our Shade has all the features of everyone else's Mattebox... go figure. If you don't need the Anamorphic model, get the small 4x4 shade.

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

so in addition to the chrosziel sunshade w/ flag, a 104-85mm adaptor and an 85-72mm step down ring would be needed? is a center bracket needed or will it hold up on it's own w/o LWS? i see there is a 3x3 version as well for about $100 less. 3x3 or 4x4?

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

4x4.. 3x3 is too small, and finding 3x3 filters is much harder than 4x4's.

All I needed was the "85mm clamp to 72mm thread" adapter. No brackets or rods are necessary. Chrosziel makes them light enough, yet strong enough.

As I mentioned earlier, this same adapter may work on that Formatt mattebox if someone wants to try it?

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

well i finally got the adapters today.. and wholly crap it works.

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

!!! Blow me away Jarred--after all this time, whaddya know. Now, we anxiously await the DVXUser deal on the box and a deal for some filters. ;D

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

Get it in the store then... gotta get one of those! :)

(see what I mean about this site making me go broke?) ;D

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

i don't believe it until i see it(the review). :P

by the way, is it just clamp on or can it attach to 15mm rods as well?

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

Yeah--but in a good way, Barry. It's a good thing this isn't CrackUser.com. ;D
