Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

Jarred I am saving up for one of these boxes as I love the specs, waiting for your final thumbs up in the process (I know it is only a formality that is pending) but buying stuff from the UK is advantagous to me as we are in the EU. I would never the less love to stick with DVXuser shop, hwta should I do, could I order it through formatt UK and pass the credit onto you guys as having made the sale?

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

dont worry about the credit, as you can see by the price we will be offering them at we arn't making money off them.

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

No I dont even mean the money . . . I mean that the guys know that dvxuser is doing a great job at in depth reviewing resulting in sales! Never the less saying I am a dvxuser memebr should help right ;) Thanks Jarred always for your hard work! . . . . PS so Formatt UK = Bogen US?

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

When news came of the Formatt, I was very excited about Jarred's initial thoughts on the Formatt box and after waiting patiently for some time, I am disappointed to see that Bogen has not followed up on a solution to the issues that the Formatt has with the DVX.

Well... my patience ran out and I ordered the Formatt from B&H along with an 82mm adapter and a conical step-up ring from Cavision - who has bad customer support IMO.

Anyway... preliminary tests using my under-scanned monitor showed no vignetting at full wide and allowing full usability of the filter stages allowing filter loading from the top, but I will capture a clip to the NLE to double check.

I think when Jarred finally gets the part from Bogen that it will be a fine fit for the DVX. And if not, you could always order the step-up ring from Cavision.

Hope this helps you fence sitters waiting patiently.

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

Tim, outstanding first post--you're batting 1000 ;D. Hopefully, Jarred will get the rings from Bogen soon.

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

thanks tim...kinda funny how you took the initiative and will probally help many users out. Maybe i should just break down and order the ring from bh as well :)

p.s.. i think you deserve an uprank.

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

The balls hit hard... it's high... it's going back, back, back... oh no! An amazing grab at the wall - you're OUT!!!

Went back and wanted to confirm - should have before I posted - but there is actually vignetting. Sorry guys. :-[ I guess my excitement and enthusiasm got the best of me.

Here is what I've found. Using the Cavision AR85-72 adapter screwed into the front of the DVX causes no visible vignetting on my under-scanned monitor. I think everyone knew this already considering the Cavision's boxes work with the DVX out of the box. When screwing in the 82mm Bogen adapter that attaches to the matte box, the inner edge does show a bit at full-wide, but the set-up does allow for the full use of the matte box, just not full use of the zoom. Which translates "doesn't work properly."

When I double-checked the assembly, It seemed that the Formatt matte box was crooked, so when I have more time I will see if I made an error in setting everything up. But it looks like the Bogen 82mm adapter ring does not work perfectly with with Cavision AR85-72 as I, and many others, had hoped it would.

Everyone can put their CC's away... nothing else to see here... move along.

And sorry for getting everyone's hopes up.

You're a crook! You're a cheat and a swindler!
That's what you are. How can you do a thing like this?
Build up a little boy's hopes and then smash all his dreams
to pieces. You're an inhuman monster!

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

Y'know, that was a fairly invective-filled speech, considering our modern-day PC. I watched that not too long ago, and when ol' Uncle Joe lit into Wonka like that I was all, like, "whoa... harsh!"

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

A bit of trivia... Jack Albertson beat out Gene Wilder (The Producers) for the 1968 best supporting actor Oscar.

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

lol.. so we cross the bogen off our list i guess.

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

NOOOOO......

It was so promising.

Does the Formatt box come with a wider opening? Tim used 82mm... You can get it with like a 93mm opening, right? If you got a step-up ring to that size, perhaps it would work.

Jarred, call Bogen back and get the piece they said they were going to send... salvage this! :)

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

Hi Guys. I jumped the gun on this too and bought the matte box directly from Chris (great service BTW). I'm probably not as concerned as most about the vignetting, but I still thought I'd go ahead and see how bad it really is. I left my UV protective filter on my lens and attached the Bogen matte box to it. My UV filter probably extends about 8mm or so off the lens affording enough clearance to allow filters to be loaded into the matte box from the top. Here's a link to a still image I recorded. I bumped up the brightness a bit to see if I could find any hints of vignetting. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see any. Oh, and I'm sorry I don't have a more exciting shot than my lovely wife demonstrating the latest laundry techniques :) But hey, check out my funky shirt collection in the background! Let me know if there's anything else you want me to check in case I'm missing something here.

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

I'm such a moron :) I shoot so much stuff with the letterbox on I forget it's there. Here's a full screen image I shot with the matte box on... sure enough there's the slightest hint of vignetting in the bottom left hand corner. Still, not enough to cause me any concern personally and definitely not worth paying twice the price for something else. I figure the only time this will ever show up is on a web dub in which case there's a lot more to worry about with a compressed, postage sized stamp version of my footage :) Anyway, hanging my head in shame over the last post :-[

I agree--lets make this work. Jarred, I know you're busy, so if you want me deal with Bogen I'd be happy to do it. Just email me the info and I'll pick it up. It sounds like we're really close on the vignetting issue and evil's screen grab shows there are workable solutions. Some of us shoot a lot of letterboxed 16:9 anyway, so even if there's a tiny bit of vignetting it wouldn't matter.

Formatt say they have 72, 82, 86 & 95mm screw-in adapters and 75.5, 80, 80.5, 86 & 93mm clamp-on adapters, but I know nothing about those or how they work.

I thought evil's grabs looked pretty good. Everything is just a hair off.
