Boardwalk Hotel implosion

Looks cool Barry. I had a similar situation here when a parking garage went down. I pretty much got a shot of the freeway and that was it... It's fab stock footie anyway though.

Good stuff, Barry!

By the way, sorry I missed seeing you in Dallas. I just didn't need the intro talk and I was kind of hoping Barak could have dragged you to the Dallas FCP meeting. We might have made a believer out of you.

They offered but I was totally worn out so I just crashed in the hotel. Should have gone though, it would have been great to see you guys.

As far as being "a believer", hey, I believe FCP is a good program, and I'm amazed at how efficiently it edits DVCPRO-HD.

It's just workflow issues that I have a problem with. Once they sort those out I'd be glad to look at it again. I just can't be convinced that not having a P2 slot is better than having one, that having to convert files is better than editing them natively, that not being able to output back to the card is better than being able to, that not having an SD slot for scene files and my digital camera is better than having an SD slot, and that I should pay an extra grand for all the things I'm not getting. I was all gung-ho for an MBP, but now I just think it's the wrong move for an HVX user. Unless someone really, really needs FCP and they can only have one computer and that one has to be a laptop... other than that, I think I'm probably going with a Sony VGN-SZ340. It's a Core 2 Duo, it's small & portable, it has a P2 slot AND an ExpressCard slot, it has a firewire port and an SD card slot, it'll run screamingly fast with DV Rack 2.0 HD and EDIUS, it'll offload cards in the field flawlessly, it'll run P2 Viewer, and it's $1000 less than the MBP.

I am probably gonna pick up a Mac/Intel desktop though. I'm just toying with whether to cheap out and go with the $1100 17" iMac, or torch it all and go with the Mac Pro, or split the difference and get the $2000 24" iMac. I think I'm leaning towards cheaping out and getting the 17" and using my Dell 2405 as an external monitor for it so it's dual-monitor and desktop cinema display-able... that will work, right? For $1100 that seems like the way to go... the Mac Pro starts at $2500 and then I'd need another monitor too, and then there's tempting upgrades, so probably $4000 total, I just don't know if it's worth it over the incremental little $1100 iMac step...

Barry, thanks for your explanation for your preference for PC with the HVX. I have been editiing video on PC for years and just recently completely switched to Mac and FCP Studio. It took me a while to get used to their style of doing things, but I do like the integration and similar functionality of FCP, Motion, Live Type, Compressor and DVDSP. I am very happy witth final output and get decent render times with the Quad core G5. It was damn expensive though. I considered a Canopus syystem 'cause I knda liked the old DV storm and accelorator card. (lots of rt) Isn't EDIUS with acceleration hardware extremely expensive? But you probably get more rt doing that than with the Mac. no? (editing with DVCPRO HD files)

Nice demolition footage. Some internet blogger said the Bush administration was behind it...

It's not a preference for PC over Mac. It's an acknowledgement that I want to be able to do certain things and the Mac laptop just plain doesn't allow it. I wish it did, but it doesn't. If it did, I'd be all over it like Michael Moore at Thanksgiving dinner.

The FCP suite is, indeed, sweet. That's why I'm thinking a PC laptop, and an FCP desktop. If the apple-compatible laptops did all that I demand (P2 slot, SD slot, firewire slot, Core 2 Duo, flawless card copying, P2 Viewer, etc) then I'd definitely rather just get one system and do with that. But the fact of the matter is, it doesn't. And I'm not willing to give those features up. So, PC laptop it appears to need to be. I was really, really, really hoping they'd come out with a Core 2 Duo MBP and add the P2 slot back in, but I doubt that's gonna happen any time soon, and now I doubt the P2 slot will happen at all.

EDIUS doesn't need any sort of accelerator hardware to run with DVCPRO-HD, I can get realtime 1080 playback on my lame-o current laptop. The cards that they offer are mainly for a desktop system to be able to output to a monitor.

Apple just tends to get out there ahead of the curve, and sometimes the world isn't ready for it. PC 3/4 is a good example. So, now third parties have to reverse engineer a PC 3/4 to PCMCIA adapter, since there are any number of PCMCIA devices which have been orphaned, including Apple's own development partner of Panasonic.

I would compromise with the mid-range iMac with Boot Camp. I am very curious whether Edius would run under Boot Camp and at what relative speed. If that is the case, it might be well worth a Mac Pro with FCS on the Mac OS side and Edius on the XP side. I have not yet bought a Mac Pro and that really is not in the works immediately, unless a massive job falls out of the sky. I'm not even considering buying until after Mac World SF to see what kind of speed bumps come along.

Love those VAIO notebooks. I have a Dell M60 and it's just clunky and so utilitarian.

While FCP 5.1.2 will make major improvements to the workflow, I am still hoping for a version which works natively with MXF. But several of my objections to QT rewrapping are resolved with this update. Metadata is apparently transferred. And import/rewrapping is a background function like the Sony XDCAM module.

But I guess we got a bit off-topic from the Boardwalk Hotel implosion. What you really need here is a Mokey artist to get the light post out of the frame.
