Blurring on Pan & Zoom Shots

I am still new to shooting in progressive scan -- I shoot a lot of car dealer ads and do a lot of vehicle line pans, pull outs, etc. I have been shooting 720/30p. How can i prevent the blurring im getting on zoom outs and pans?

For TV ads I would suggest 720-59.94P, AVC-I 100/60p @ shutter OFF... or shutter ON @ 1/120 if required.

720p60 is Progressive Scan also....

Or as Joe & Razz's advice, increase shutter speed.

Firstly the low down. Any movement in shot or movement of camera will induce motion blur. The amount of motion blur is dependant on your shutter speed. A lower shutter speed such as 1/60th will have more, a higher shutter speed of 1/120th will have less, showing a cleaner image on movement. BUT, in addition to this you also induce stutter, commonly referred to as the stacatto effect.

Now my opinion. All things being equal, shooting a tvcm for a car yard, where all your shots are in the yard of static vehicles, I would never shoot at a high shutter speed. The stutter / stacatto effect would not serve me any purpose.

Be careful not to over analyse still frames from whats intended as motion video. When you scrub through your edit and see motion blur in frame dont think, hmmm wish that one frame was cleaner, you should be worried about how it appears in motion. We are not still photographers here.

Another opinion I have - your shooting for a local car dealer. Does that mean the tvcm should look local? I think not. When I say local I refer to that home video look of 60P. If I were you Id at least continue to shoot 30P but - Why not shoot in 24 fps?

Also, what's the purpose of your zoom? Can you avoid the zoom and your issue altogether? SO, if motion blur on 30P @ 1/60th during a pan or zoom or pan is too high for your taste, can you not zoom? Can you slow down your pan?

More opinion - I'd personally not zoom. I can think of a number of alternatives.

Just some food for thought. I think only using a blanket "increase shutter speed" approach would be a mistake.
