Blurred projected backgrounds

Hi everyone, I'm Ruel from the Philippines. I've been getting loads of very helpful info from your posts and this will be my first time to join.

On the 'film look', I am currently working on a low budget music video for a new local reggae band and hoping to get a filmic feel out of the DVX100A - first thing to conquer is depth of field issue. Given that it is already lit like film.

What I consider doing is getting some outdoor footage that I could use as background for medium to close shots of the artist performing. The footage will be projected 'blurred' behind the artist to give the impression of narrow DOF.

Has anybody done this? Any thoughts? Cheers.

Re: Blurred projected backgrounds

Yeah copy the video clip on two tracks and mask the forground object on one track and blur the background on the other track...What NLE are you using..?

Re: Blurred projected backgrounds

I edit using Final Cut Pro.

But for this work I hope to do the effect in production and not in post. A projector will be used in a small set to project the footage. The focus will then be adjusted for blur hoping to create the illusion of narrow DOF.

Scheduled to do tests next week.

Mee too. Maybe if you can try to compare your results on camera (back projector) or with a greenscreen (chorma key). Althought DV tend to be a little hard to chroma key, that's the path I would choose... Anyway, It seems like a good idea...

Re: Blurred projected backgrounds

I dunno, greenscreen is great, but I think Ruel might have hit on something here. It may turn out to be a different look altogether, or surreal.

Re: Blurred projected backgrounds

What kind of projection system are you going to use. You are going to have to place the projector behind the subject so the projection is not on the subjects face or anything....just thinking outloud

Re: Blurred projected backgrounds

It's usually done with a back projector, like in classic car scenes? 8)

The projector stays behind the semi-transparent screen, projecting a mirrored image. The talent is in front of the screen, opposte to the projector. That way, nothing will cast a shadow on the screen...

I'm not saying greenscreen will yeld better results, I just imagine it being easier to accomplish. I definately want to see Ruels results!

Test shoot scheduled next week. Would love to share my results. Cheers!
