Blue Ray burning announced for 2005!

Didn't know where this fits on the forum.  There really is no main HD post.

Pretty bold statments from the pioneer camp.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/press/release/detail/0,,2076_4313_191756425,00.html

The highlight of the article in my opinion...
"Blu-ray Disc offers five times as much capacity as current DVDs, enabling movie studios to put a complete high definition movie on a single Blu-ray disc with more added features than currently available on DVD including interactive features.  It also will allow a consumer to record a high definition television program to disc or to store 50 GB worth of data from their computer.

Pioneer is showcasing its Blu-ray Disc future at CES with prototypes of home use and computer recorders.  Both will be able to record and play back most DVD discs as well as record and play the new Blu-ray Disc format, making the transition from DVD to Blu-ray Disc easier for consumers.  Pioneer’s internal computer drive for Blu-ray Disc recording is expected to ship in 2005."

2005?!!?  Wow!!  DVD was realeased about 7 years or more before burners even became a mainstream reality!! Not saying that Blue Ray is the answer vs HD-DVD but either way... promising news for HD in general.  Hope pioneer can deliever on their word.  Sure it will be priced through the roof at first but at least the burning answer doesn't appear to 7 years away from the release of the tecnology....

wow....

Does this mean DVD players are going to up in price? Specifically, will current DVD players play these?

So regular DVDs will drop in price, which will be great for Joe Average consumer. I know that as soon as this comes out and I see the quality of an HD DVD I'm gonna be jonesin' for one.

Do you mean actual DVD-R's or Movie DVD's? I'm sure either way, the standard DVD as we know them will continue to drop but as far as commercial DVD's, I'm sure the studios and creator will have a cleaver marketing plan to get the price they want how they want.

Re: Blue Ray burning announced for 2005!

I would imagine that at least the first few offerings of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players will have to be backwards compatible with standard DVDs.

Though I understand Blu-Ray is still planning to go with the disc-in-a-cartridge concept. How 1970s is that?

Re: Blue Ray burning announced for 2005!

All new blu ray recorders will be backwards compatible, meaning they will play standard DVDs. They will only record blu ray though. I read an article very recently on this, and all the blu ray on display at CES had this facility.

A standard dvd player can now be picked up for the price of a dvd movie. I have seen them on sale in supermarkets for as little as £18.95 for a player. They are not going to get any cheaper than that!

As for blu ray recorders, well you can take it as read that the technology for this is all in place. It took a while with DVD recorders, but the guys now know what they are doing and so do the disk manufacturers. there won't be any delay in bringing this stuff out. I don't expect to pay much more than £150 ($280) for a blue ray recorder for my mac and PC.

Disc-in-a-cartridge? Really? Hurray!!! This is what I've been waiting for since they released minidisc. Well, is there something wrong with the '70s :) Everything they made in the 70s was great, and was made to last. CDs and DVDs have always been a poor format to buy music or movies, or even to archive your own stuff. They always get scratchy after 5 years and start getting drops.
And look at minidisc. They don't look like the 1970s. They're clearly a 90s product. Hope they get rid of the translucent neon-colors they had on most of those.
I already saw some XDCAM discs, and they're in a cartridge, but I never guessed they'd do the same with the consumer stuff. Everything that breaks in 5 years means that the consumer has to buy the stuff again, and again.

Go cartridges!!

Re: Blue Ray burning announced for 2005!

Blue-ray players/recorders CAN and Will be able to play back current DVD's. But current DVD players will not be able to play back new Blue-ray discs.

Many people here would argue that SD will not be "obselete" for a long time... however, while I agree with that, I get what you mean. If I have a choice to watch my SD DVD copy of Lord of the Rings vs my HD DVD/Blue Ray copy, time to file away my SD copy or give it to grampa Bob to play on his "obselete" SD DVD player. The circle of life... ::) My DVD collection has gone on hold for a bit. Hopefully we'll start to see some releases by summer time.

On a compatibility note... I would image that the Blue Ray burners will still be able to burn regular DVD's as well as CD-R's. (lets hope) As far as recordable stand alone units... it doesn't seem like DVD units have really even caught on yet (neither did stand alone CD units for that matter) Cartrige or not, whoever gets it out first at a reasonable price point with reverse compatiblity is going to win... (backed by pioneer and apple, it would appear blue ray has a slight lead by having the techno junkies in the bag) Hope there is no underlying technology challanges that there are keeping back from us... I guess we will see soon enough.

Re: Blue Ray burning announced for 2005!

What, of course, would be nice is if Blu-Ray or HD-DVD players would upconvert SD DVDs.

Re: Blue Ray burning announced for 2005!

As was mentioned earlier, both HD-DVD and Blu-ray are backwards compatible [meaning they will play all flavors of standard definition DVDs]. It is also very probable that HD-DVD Players will play Blu-ray DVDs and vice-versa, but they can only record in their native standard.

Some people have also mentioned a concern about the initial high price of HD-DVD players, this is not new technology requiring a ground up development effort so the initial prices might be a little higher than expected but should come down quickly. I expect in the $300 range. Keep in mind that although you can purchase SD-DVD players for as little as $50 at Wal-Mart, they are crap. You can still get a good quality DVD player for $200 or so.

What is the difference between a good DVD player and a crappy one? It has little to do with the quality of the image [although the more expensive DVD players have more codec’s and can therefore play different standards – DVD-R, -RW, +R etc..] It has more to do with the amount of cache available, crappy DVD players have very little so they tend to pause every so often to buffer more information, especially with –R DVDs.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant. I know many who have these monstorous DVD collections, and being the video junkies I know they are, I can only imagine their disapointment when their favorite stuff comes out HD and a repurchase is in order. Bummer. So I am now only buying the stuff I think I have to have now (or at least I think I have to have), and looking to the future.

I didn't know that they'll all be compatible with each other. That's good. Maybe this will keep some of us from having closets with boxes full of (metaphorical) Beta tapes... :-/

Blu-Ray uses a blue laser and HD-DVD uses a red laser. I've not heard that they'll be able to play each other's formats. Given the different hardware and the different method of recording, I'd be surprised if they could.

Can you link me to an article or something mentioning this?

Re: Blue Ray burning announced for 2005!

I recently attended the HPA technology retreat in Palm Springs where much of the discussion was about HD codec’s and DVDs. Although both sides made a compelling case for their proposed standards, it was widely accepted that each standard would play both formats. The studios are gearing up in a huge way for the roll out of HD-DVD and even though many of them don’t think it will be adopted as quickly as standard definition DVD they acknowledge that it will probably the second fastest consumer acceptance in history. So they are not sparing any expense nor will they allow a format war to slow its deployment.

Actually, that is not correct. Blu-Ray, which uses a short wavelength blue-violet laser pickup (hence the name) offers 27 GB of capacity on a single-layer DVD and 54 GB on a dual-layer DVD. That is enough for 2+ hours and 4+ hours of HDTV programming, respectively, assuming 9 GB per hour and MPEG-2 encoding.

The HD DVD format also employs a blue laser, but employs much of the existing manufacturing process for regular DVD. It claims capacities of 15 and 30 GB for read-only and rewriteable versions and (supposedly) offers considerable manufacturing cost savings over the ‘from scratch’ Blu-Ray format.
