Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD: Microsoft speaks

This quote from Sony President Ryoji Chubachi yesterday in Tokyo really pisses me off :

"We at Sony don't believe that a unified standard is possible. We will continue to push and persuade HD DVD supporters that Blu-ray is better. Ultimately the winner will be decided by the consumer."

In other words: screw you consumers, hope you don't buy into the wrong format!

I don't know about you guys, but short of buying a PS3 or XBOX 360 I am not buying into any format for a long time, this is gonna blow. Consumers had enough trouble (and still do) just trying to understand all the burnable DVD format differences (hell, they are just starting to understand widescreen vs. pan and scan). Now there's gonna be DVD, HD DVD, and BluRay movies on store shelves, talk about a nightmare.

The way this looks I may just skip this generation and hope they get their **** together in the next one. My hope now is that both sides lose lots of $ and that neither format receives much support from Joe Q. Public and they just disappear (like Divx).

I mean look at this game its not recoigized as the best game graphically and design detail ever. PLUS its a cool ass game series. MGS4: POWER of Bluray

Nice stills. But cutscenes rarely look bad, even on the current generation of systems. How is it that Blu Ray MEDIA is better for gaming? I don't get it. It's just media, there's much more involved in developing games than what type of disc its burned to.

Certainly siding with Sony hasn't historically been a good bet. Look at their track record:

L-Cassette

Consumer Beta

MiniDisc

SACD

(and likely others that I just can't remember)

Other than red book CD (CD-DA) and the Play Station I can't think of another example of Sony backing a winning format in the consumer arena. For them, this may be enough as royalties from a successful consumer format may justify the endeavor of backing as many "different and non compatible" formats as they can. It seems to be the old "throw them all at the wall and see which ones sticks" approach.

Certainly their professional divisions do much better and have good market penetration and acceptance.

This isn't a comment on the technology, but rather the track record of Sony's success in choosing the "winning" consumer format.

Games are highly compressed onto DVDs and such. If you look at Battlefield 2 (for the PC), it comes with 3 dvds that you have to get info off of to install. This will help the gaming industry by not compressing a bunch of graphics and information onto a bunch of separate disks. Most games have HD resolution, so with these BluRay DVDS, they will surely have potential for awesomeness.

Maybe, but they have to make good on their capacity claims first.

Any medium with enough space can do the same thing. There's nothing magic about Blu-ray.

this hing sounds like the Flash system. Flash 8 has been released for a month but noboy publishes his work the swf8 format because everybody has FPlayer 6 or older version....HD-DVD--DVD? just the same

I'll throw a few in:
Digital-8
MicroMV
ATRAC portable music players, when everyone else was going MP-3
MemoryStick

Yep, I was certain that I missed a few. Thanks for reinforcing my argument.

By the way, what type of odds do the Las Vegas bookies give on Sony backing a successful format?

When the critics say that BluRay is only in the lab, well they are correct. To say that they are creating their own disk, well thats not always true (more not than so). I mean just because a optical drive manufacturer make drives doesn't mean they make the disc as well. They are two totally different pieces of machinery.
When I visited Korea last month I got to see some BluRay samples and of course working media (now the media is stupid crazy expensive none the less.) The technology behind the Bluray is fairly complicated, but yet ever simple...It just has to deal with the optics and the durability of disk.

They both have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Bluray is supported by Sony, Phillips, Pioneer,LG, Hitachi, HP, Dell, Panasonic, Sharp, Verbatim, Thompson, TDK, and Apple.
HD-DVD is supported by Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, Memory-Tech and a few others.
HD-DVD is backwards compatible and BluRay is not. HD can also be manufactured on the same lines as the current DVD's.
HD has a layer capacity of 15GB, with 2 layers per side, and 2 sides.
BD has a layer capacity of 25GB, with 2 layers (and up to 8 in laboratories), with 1 side.
HD uses close to the same coating as DVD. BD uses a new coating that is almost scratch proof.
BD will cost about $10 more than todays DVD and HD will be about 10% more.

Theres alot more technical mumbo jumbo but I wont put you to sleep. In my opinion I would watch the 2 worlds largest computer manufacturers, DELL and HP. They have both signed on for BD, but that doesn't mean they wont change their minds later. If they they go BD and stay you can probably bet that BD will beat HD.

those arent cut scnes have you ever played metasl gear solid it look like the whole time.

Oh ok.

well then it looks like a bad design flaw to control your character from the front view of him, I dont see how youd be able to kill anyone, it would be a great benefit though for killing people trying to sneak up behind you though

Nope. Silly names only appeal to kids who can't spell. Won't do Blu-ray, BlueTooth. Won't even use Blue Cheer. Come to think of it, I don't think I even used to listen to them.

Maybe the marketing yahoos need to should stop targeting the l33t.

I won't even buy an i this or an e that.

Now, a High Definition disk...gosh. Sounds like it might go with a High Definition television, doesn't it? Kinda like a Video Home System sounds like something useful. The other one...sounded like a pre-release version of...something or other.

How do you spell curmudgeon... And why do I think "Soupy Sales" whenever I see BlueTooth?

well the game can swtich perspectives and stuff easily. Hideo komja the game designer has like wanted to make movies but he never did so he decide to make games of movie he wanted to make so he pushed the gaming to it max. its a cool game yiu should try it.
