blu ray...... shmoo ray

omg ... but have you ever heard about Red Ray which plays 4K at absurdly low 10Mbit/sec at 24fps???
Already demonstrated in LV last week. Jaw dropping experience.

... and it will be available this year for price under 1000,- USD. I guess it's just your average DVD driver hooked up on special chips which just recompress amazingly tweaked wavelet compression - Graeme Nattress is mastermind.

wait ... what? seriously? Is my custom title about to say Punk'd?

The movie companies will take this technology and put one movie on it and a DRM key that is 99 movies long.

Ummm... isn't Red Ray for the Red Camera? Or is Red now getting into commercial video players?

This is way cooler than blue ray as far as awesome science goes. And cool things matters more than practicality sometimes. Just think about how it would be pitched:

"We can store data as holographic images, 3D storage space!"

Versus...

"Let's do the same thing, but with a smaller laser." Just not as impressive.

RedRay played a reel of RED ONE footage at the Reduser NAB party that was 4k at DVD throughput speeds using standard red laser tech. The 4K material didn't have to originate from a RED ONE and a lot of people are talking about the possibilities of RED lisencing the codec so the possibilities for 1080p internet streaming and the like can come into fruition.

The RED RAY it self seams geared toward the RED camera system on workflow, but the codec at its heart doesn't seem to be.

Red is for everything they want and they like. But commercial video players? Well maybe it moves that way but now its amazing tool how to present your 4K footage for pros and theaters if they can afford 4K diplay for 30K or 4K projector for 100K if it has several HD-SDI inputs.
HDMI is not enough. We need some cheaper commercial plugs capable of 4K.

Interesting thing is that wavelet codec is not so extremely effective in smaller resolutions like HD, SD. So I think we must slightly tame our euphoria.
