Blu-ray output: 1440x1080 ???

Okay, first pardon if this has been asked an answered before. I did do a search and did not turn anything up. If I missed something, feel free to just point in in the right direction.

My intended output is blu-ray HD disk in 24p. The "effective" resolution of the HMC150 at 1440x810 got me thinking. Since 1440x1080 is part of the blu-ray spec, would it be more efficient, or even better to render footage at that resolution? I see a lot of talk about 1080 vs. 720, but not much about 1440.

I am not sure about all the factors that might be involved in choosing a resolution for final out. I know that the 1440 spec uses non-square pixels, but I'm not sure how that would affect the final quality.

Also, for any resolution below 1080, the blu-ray player hardware will have to do some upconverting to display on a 1080 screen, correct? So is it better to trust the end user hardware for the upconversion or to handle that in your output?

The 1440x1080 you are talking about is an interlaced format. As long as you're shooting progressive you need to either go 720p or 1080p. If you're shooting interlaced go for 1080i as in 1920x1080i.

Your camera is doing whatever it needs to do to get your 1920x1080 image onto the cards. Squeezing it down to 1440, only to have the BluRay player stretch it BACK to 1920 again is folly.

You have a 1920x1080 image writing onto the cards, then burn a 1920x1080 image onto the BluRay. Couldn't be simpler.

I'm with Perrone, it seems to me that any theoretical gains you might have by having access to the raw, 'effective' resolution is toast as soon as the camera does it's conversion to 1920x1080, and that hopefully, the computer inside the camera is doing the most effective conversion possible - more so than we'd be able to accomplish by hand.

It really is bizarre that in this day in age we still have complications involving pixel aspect ratios. Why they still can't make 'em all square is definitely frustrating.

It's an awful lot better not, you have 1920x1080, 1280x720, or 1440x1080.
1920x1080 and 1280x720 are square pixels and 1440x1080 is 1.33. Nice :)

Yeah . . .

Yeah . . .

Okay, makes sense. I was thinking in terms of saving disk space. But then I probably wouldn't have a project so long that it would fill up an entire Blu-ray anyway. So this is probably a case of me outsmarting myself.
